RICHMOND, Va. - Led by a school record from sophomore Nathan Ober, the Catholic University men's swimming team finished first in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon at the Collegiate School Saturday.
The Cardinals finished with 1409.5 points to edge out Washington College by three points. Lynchburg placed third with 1232 points while Division II Frostburg State was fourth with 1171.5.
Ober finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.66 seconds to break the school record set by former teammate Chris Grunbok at the 2020 Landmark Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 15, 2020 with a mark of 56.83 seconds.
Freshman Jackson Hicks placed third in the 100 breast with a time of 58.66 seconds. He also placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.63, touching the wall just ahead of Ober who finished third in 2:08.95.
Ober had a second-place showing in the 200-yard medley relay as well, teaming up with sophomore Jack Hufner, freshman William Crecca and junior Ellis Prescott to post a time of 1:36.35.
Ober, Hufner, Prescott and senior Jeffrey Schriefer-Flores finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:12.87 while Prescott, Hufner, Schriefer-Flores and senior Lenny Brown won the 800-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 7:12.07.
Individually, Prescott was second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.47) and fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:50.04) while Hufner was second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.31) and third in the 100-yard backstroke (52.36 seconds).
Schriefer-Flores was fourth in the 200 back (2:00.09) and fifth in the 100 back (54.28 seconds). Senior Joshua Roberts was third in the 200 back with a time of 1:59.44.
Brown also had a top-5 individual finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.15.
Catholic faces a 42-day layoff before returning to action at Mary Washington on Saturday, Jan. 15.
