Cards Drop Home Opener to Randolph-Macon in Overtime

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Randolph-Macon's Colin DiSesa scored his third goal of the game with just 2.6 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Yellow Jackets a 10-9 victory over the Catholic University men's lacrosse team Saturday at Carlini Field.

The Cardinals (0-2) fell for just the second time in their last 16 home openers dating back to 2004.

Trailing 9-7 with less than eight minutes remaining, Catholic scored the final two goals in regulation to force overtime, the last coming from sophomore Jack McGorry with 3:33 remaining off an assist from junior Mark Tocchio.

McGorry finished with two goals while Tocchio picked up his first two assists of the season.

After forcing overtime, the Cardinals won the opening faceoff of the extra period and had a chance for the win in sudden victory, but Randolph-Macon was able to force them into a shot clock violation.

Freshman Nic Pezone made his seventh save of the game on the ensuing possession, but a turnover and failed clear gave the ball back to the Yellow Jackets where DiSesa netted his eighth goal in two games this season to win it.

Catholic finished with 24 turnovers and have already totaled 46 in two games this season. Both teams scored five goals off of turnovers as Randolph-Macon committed 16.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game's first seven minutes before the Yellow Jackets responded with five-straight over the next 23 to take a 5-2 lead at halftime.

However, Catholic scored the first four goals of the third quarter in a span of 5:55 to retake the lead. Two of the goals came from senior Vince Catenacci who finished the game with three after adding his third to give the Cardinals a 7-6 lead after three quarters.

Randolph-Macon (2-0) opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive tallies to go in front 9-7 with 11:41 to play before the Cards rallied to force overtime.

Tocchio and sophomore Sean Baudo also totaled three points with one goal and two assists each.

Sophomore Mike McShea won 15-of-23 faceoffs and picked up nine ground balls while sophomore Collin Stein had six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Catholic faces its second-straight opponent from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) on Wednesday when it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 5 p.m., faceoff. The Tigers won last year's meeting in overtime at Cardinal Stadium, 9-8.
