WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team secured their sixth-straight victory on Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference match up against Wilkes.
Cullen Lotz and
Ryan Carickhoff led the squad with four goals each, guiding the Cardinals to a 22-9 victory.
Logan Farrington opened the scoring against Wilkes, netting a goal within two minutes of game action. Carickhoff provided the assist on Farrington's goal, then followed with his own goal about a minute later, scoring off a feed from
Steven Dezelic. Dezelic then contributed a goal of his own, the third of the game. Lotz and
Alejandro Masferrer added goals in the final five minutes of the first to put the Cardinals up 5-0 heading into the second.
Catholic was the first to score in quarter two, as Carickhoff added his second goal of the game, capitalizing on a man-up opportunity just three minutes in. It was Ben Byers who began the scoring for Wilkes, finding the back of the net early in the second to put them on the board.
Will Gilfillan answered, followed by two more goals from Carickhoff and another from Lotz.
The Colonels continued to find their momentum in the quarter, as Stone Sosnovik picked up two more goals in an attempt to narrow the gap. Lotz closed out the quarter by securing his hat trick, and
Chris McCabe capped the half with the 12th goal of the game. Catholic outscored Wilkes 7-3 in the second, leading 12-3 heading into the intermission.
The Cardinals stayed hot after the break, scoring six goals in the third quarter while holding the Colonels to only two. It was Wilkes who started the scoring in the second half with another goal from Byers. With 10 minutes left in the third,
Sean Salkeld scored his first goal of the season. Later on,
Parker Damon also scored his first of the season, the second of his career.
After logging three assists so far in the game,
Burke Healy finally snuck one past the Colonel defense. Lotz, Farrington and Dezelic extended their tallies, each scoring one more in the third as Catholic led 18-5 heading into the final quarter.
Quarter four was evenly matched, each team scoring four goals. Sosnovik started it off for Wilkes, but
Grant Lanham responded, scoring the second of his career. With 10 minutes left of game action,
Joe Devine netted the 20th goal of the game, his second of the season, scoring off a feed from Damon.
Matt Shandley followed, scoring the first goal of his season, unassisted.
It was
Jack Suchanek who capped off the scoring for the Cardinals, scoring straight off a faceoff, just two seconds after Snyder scored one for Wilkes. Wilkes' Anthony DiFrancesco added one more for the Colonels, but Catholic had locked in the win, 22-9.
Carickhoff led on the day, recording eight points with four assists and four goals. Dezelic followed with six, netting two goals and dishing out four assists. Lotz and Healy each had five points, with four goals and an assist from Lotz and four assists and a goal from Healy. 14 different Cardinals scored against the Colonels and three members of the squad notched their first goals of the season.
Connor Baia and Suchanek both found success in faceoffs, Baia going 15-18 with nine ground balls, and Suchanek going 13-16 with eight ground balls. In goal,
Colton Manorek earned the win, recording one save in his 30 minutes of play.
This win improves Catholic's record to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in Landmark Conference play. Up next, Catholic will host Drew at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 2.
