Box Score WASHINGTON - Despite the frigid air and snowfall, The Catholic University of America men's lacrosse team traveled to Arlington, Va., to take on Marymount University for the first road contest of the season, where they walked away with an 8-7 win over the Saints.
The victory puts the Cards on a two-game winning streak with a 2-0 record for the season. With the loss the Eagles start the season with a 0-1 record.
The Cards took an early lead in the first quarter when midfielder Dylan Neville (Port Washington, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) fired a shot past Marymount goalie Mike Kemple for a score of 1-0.
Marymount rallied back and scored three unanswered goals before the end of the first fifteen minutes of play, ending the first quarter 3-1 in favor of the Saints.
The Cards evened the score to 3-3 by halftime. Midfielder Jonathan Curran (Ridgefield, Conn. / Ridgefield) scored a man up goal off a pass from midfielder Ethan Rodriguez (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit Prep) followed by an unassisted goal by attackman Billy Kirmsse (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) to end the half.
CUA attackmen Jack Oakes (Downingtown, Pa. / Bishop Shanahan) and Tim Keith (King of Prussia, Pa. / Archbishop Carroll) each ripped a pair into the goal during the second half. The Eagles tried to stay alive scoring four additional goals, but could not get a go ahead opportunity, as Catholic midfielder Victor Licata (Towson, Md. / Loyola-Blakefield) notched a goal during the final thirty minutes of play, ending the game in an 8-7 Cardinal win.
The Cardinals picked up 34 total ground balls and caused 11 turnovers during the 60-minute game with Pat Michalski (Pasadena, Md. / Chesapeake) leading the squad with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Harrison Holak (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) guarded the cage and made 15 saves throughout the game, while Michalski, Dan McCallan (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City), and Coleman Walsh III (Portland, Maine / Cheverus) anchored the defense with the help of Matthew Cirieco (Somers, N.Y. / Somers) and Alex Quicksell (Walkersville, Md. / Walkersville).
"With the blizzard at half-time and snow covered field it was tough to see the ball," said CUA Men's Lacrosse Head Coach Brooks Singer. "The guys were slipping a bunch, but we stayed strong and pulled off the win.
The Cardinals head to Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Feb. 21 for a 1:00 p.m. face off against the Yellow Jackets.
