Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. – On a frigid Wednesday evening, CUA (1-2)
dropped an 8-6 decision to Marymount, in a game played at Long
Bridge Park. The Cardinals trailed 7-3 entering the 4th quarter,
and pulled to within two twice, but the Saints (1-0) were able to
hold on for the victory. Brendan Englert found the back of the net
three times on the night for the Cards.
Englert got the scoring started 3:53 into the contest, when he
scored an unassisted goal to put the visitors on top 1-0.
Connor Kellogg then scored the first of two straight for Marymount
to tie things at one after the first 15 minutes.
Kellogg struck again, this time 2:56 into the 2nd quarter, to make
it 2-1 Saints, but Brian Finnegan answered for CUA to knot the
score late in the quarter.
Goals by Ian Gordon and Garrett Nealon then sent the Cardinals
into halftime trailing 4-2.
Englert opened the 3rd the same way he did to begin the game,
finding the back of the net off a feed from Dominic Lee to pull CUA
within one.
Marymount closed the quarter out on a 3-0 run though, receiving
two goals from Kellogg and another from Jack Burke to take a 7-3
advantage into the final 15.
For the third time in four quarters, Englert scored first in the
4th, bringing CUA to within 7-4 with 11:10 on the clock.
William Cowan then got into the act for CUA, and with 10:37
remaining, the Cardinals were down by only two.
Vince Lodato gave Marymount a three-goal lead when he scored with
8:20 on the clock, but CUA still had time to mount a comeback.
Cam Feldman did his part, scoring with 2:21 remaining to make it
8-6, but CUA was only able to get the ball back two more times, and
the Cardinals turned it over on both chances.
Marymount finished with a slim 36-33 advantage in shots, and the
Saints also narrowly won the ground battle, 30-28.
Both teams went 9 of 18 at the X, with Lee earning all nine wins
on the Cards' side.
Harrison Holak, the reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Player
of the Week, sent back 11 shots in goal for CUA, while
Saints' keeper Derek DiGiovanni stopped 13 shots for the home
team.
CUA is back in action on Saturday afternoon when the Cardinals
welcome Frostburg State to Cardinal Stadium. The opening face-off
is set for 2 p.m.
