Thompson Scores 19 in Road Loss at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Catholic women's basketball team dropped a midweek Landmark Conference road matchup at Elizabethtown by a final score of 68-58 on Wednesday evening. 

Erin Thompson scored 15 of her team-high 19 points in the second half to lead Catholic while Rachel Bussanich and Erin Doherty added in 12 points each in the defeat. Thompson added four assists, three steals, and a pair of rebounds in the contest while Bussanich pulled down seven rebounds. 

Despite trailing 12-3 at the end of the first, Catholic outscored the Blue Jays 21-16 in the second to cut the deficit to just four points heading into the locker room at halftime. 

Elizabethtown led it 17-3 with 8:07 left in the first half before a 6-0 run trimmed the deficit to eight. With 4:43 left in the first half, Keegan Douglas drilled a three off of a Thompson assist to make it 20-14. Douglas scored again with 2:27 to play in the second, getting Catholic within four. The Blue Jays pushed the lead back to eight, but the Cardinals scored the last four points of the half with Doherty making it 28-24 with 34 seconds remaining. 

Less than two minutes into the third, Catholic tied the contest after baskets from Doherty and Thompson made it 28-28. For the first time in the contest, the Cardinals took the lead with 6:59 remaining in the third as Anna Scoblick scored off a Doherty feed. 

A Doherty triple with 3:29 to play in the third quarter gave Catholic a 44-38 lead, its largest of the contest, but the Blue Jays scored the final 12 points of the period to head into the fourth with a 50-44 lead. 

Thompson scored five straight points for the Cardinals in the middle of the fourth period to keep Catholic within six at the 6:26 mark, but Elizabethtown stretched it right back to nine 14 seconds later. Thompson put the Cardinals back within six once more with 1:39 to play, but the Blue Jays closed out a 10-point victory. 

Catholic's defense continued to make life tough on opposing ballhandlers, forcing 24 turnovers to the Cardinals' 16 on Wednesday night. 

Summer McNulty led the way for the Blue Jays with 28 points on 9-15 shooting. 

Catholic sits firmly in third place in the Landmark Conference standings with a record of 7-4. Elizabethtown holds a two-game advantage for the number two seed at 9-2 and now holds the tiebreaker over the Cardinals. The top two teams in the standings will host Semifinal matchups on Wednesday, February 22. 

Next up, the Cardinals head to Selinsgrove, Pa. to face Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.
