Cardinals Drop Tight One To No. 19 Blue Jays

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's basketball dropped a tight contest in D.C. on Wednesday night, falling 64-58 to the 19th-ranked Elizabethtown Blue Jays.

Erin Doherty had 14 points and five steals while Carly Mulvaney scored 14 and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench, but a third-quarter spurt from the Blue Jays was the difference in the contest.

Catholic led 30-25 at the break, but Elizabethtown outscored the Cardinals 23-11 in the third period. It was the only period of the contest in which Catholic did not get the better of the Blue Jays.

Catholic led 11-5 with 6:03 to play in the first quarter after an Erin Thompson fastbreak layup made it 10 straight points for the Cardinals.

ETown tied it up twice late in the period, but Doherty scored the final four points of the period to give the Cardinals a 19-15 lead at the end of one.

An 8-0 run for the Blue Jays put them on top with 6:39 to play in the first half, but Anna Scoblick ended the mini drought and Keegan Douglas tied the game at 23 with a layup off a Scoblick feed. Douglas hit a three-pointer with 3:51 left in the second to put Catholic back ahead. Doherty once again scored the final bucket of the quarter and Catholic went into the locker room leading by five.

Rachel Bussanich ended an 11-0 run from Elizabethtown to start the third, cutting the deficit to 41-32 with 3:50 left in the third. Mulvaney scored five straight to get Catholic back within seven at the 2:33 mark and did so once again with 20 ticks left on the third quarter clock, sending the Cardinals into the fourth quarter trailing 48-41.

The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 14 in the period, but a resilient Catholic bunch pushed back into the game with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 55-49. Catholic cut it to five on a Sarah White jumper with 3:41 to play, but the Blue Jays knocked down a three at the 2:34 mark.

Mulvaney answered off a feed from Bussanich and the Cardinals were once again within five with 2:20 to go. After a Doherty steal, Mulvaney scored again to cut it to three with 1:50 remaining. The Blue Jays knocked down their free throws to close out a 64-58 contest.

Catholic pulled down 18 offensive rebounds in the contest with seven of Bussanich's rebounds coming on the offensive end.
