Box Score BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the second consecutive game, the Catholic women's basketball team used a dominant second-half performance to pick up a victory, defeating Moravian 45-44 on Saturday afternoon.
Catholic more than doubled its scoring output in the second, scoring 31 of the team's 45 points in the final two quarters. Rachel Bussanich notched her second straight double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Cards trailed by nine at halftime after being outscored by seven points in the second quarter. In the third, Catholic trailed by 11 with 5:36 to play before an 8-0 run got Catholic back in the game. Anna Scoblick started the run with a layup, followed by an Erin Doherty three. A Bussanich layup and an Erin Thompson free throw at the 1:49 mark had the Cardinals back within three. After a Moravian bucket, Thompson scored the final bucket of the quarter to send the game into the fourth with Catholic trailing 31-28.
After a Sammie McCarter layup with 8:23 to play put Catholic within two, Scoblick tied the game at the 7:47 mark for the first time since 5-5. Scoblick gave Catholic the lead with 6:49 remaining and Catholic never trailed the rest of the way. McCarter and Bussanich scored a bucket each to put the Cardinals on top 41-36 with 5:07 left.
The Hounds cut the deficit to two with 3:57 left, but Doherty hit a jumper a minute later to extend the lead back to four. Bussanich scored Catholic's final bucket at the 1:55 mark and the Cardinals were able to hang on for a one-point win.
McCarter had four points and a team-high five assists off the bench for the Cardinals. Doherty chipped in with 10 points and Scoblick pulled down nine rebounds to go with six second-half points. Catholic improves to 7-1 with a third straight win.
The Cardinals will make the short trip to Gallaudet on Wednesday with tip set for 7 p.m.
