Cardinals Survive Late Rally, Down Moravian in Overtime

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Catholic University women's basketball junior Erin Doherty scored five of her career-high 24 points in overtime as the 20th-ranked Cardinals posted a 71-65 victory over Moravian Saturday at Johnston Hall.

Catholic (13-1, 4-1 LC) posted its sixth-straight win, improving its record to 6-0 on the road this season.

Saturday marked the first overtime game for the Cardinals in three seasons while the win snapped a four-game losing streak in overtime games dating back to Dec. 20, 2017.

Doherty scored 20 or more points for the second time in the last three games and for the fifth time in her career. Catholic is 4-1 in games where she scores 20 or more.

The Cardinals led 56-35 with 8:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 27-6 the rest of the way, forcing overtime on a layup by Doherty with six seconds remaining in regulation.

The Greyhounds (4-12, 2-3 LC) capitalized on nine fourth-quarter turnovers by Catholic and scored 20 points off 24 Cardinal miscues for the game.

Led by five points from Doherty, Catholic scored nine of the game's 12 points in overtime, going 5-of-6 from the free throw line while holding Moravian without a field goal as they were 0-for-6. The Cardinals also held a 9-3 edge in rebounds in the extra period.

Despite their fourth-quarter comeback, the Greyhounds (4-12, 2-3 LC) led only once in the game, scoring the first basket to take a 2-0 lead before a basket by junior Rachel Bussanich tied the game just 22 seconds later.

Catholic led 18-9 after the first quarter and 33-20 at halftime.

Senior Amanda Johnson posted her first double this season and the third of her career with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Bussanich grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds.

Junior Sammie McCarter added 12 points and freshman Carly Mulvaney had 10. Junior Amelia Baldo totaled six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Catholic concludes its three-game road trip on Wednesday when it heads to Goucher for a 7 p.m. tip-off from the Decker Sports & Recreation Center Arena.
