Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Erin Doherty scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Catholic University women's basketball team to an 87-69 victory over William Smith in the Jamie L. Roberts Classic presented by Sport Tours International.
The Cardinals (8-1), who are receiving votes in both the WBCA and D3hoops.com national polls, remained undefeated in five tournament games this season after going 2-0 at the Rebecca Martin Tip-Off Tournament and 2-0 at the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.
Meanwhile, Catholic also improved to 2-0 against the Herons as it won the first meeting between the two teams since the Cardinals posted a 68-59 victory at home on Jan. 7, 2002.
Doherty totaled the third 20-point game of her career while adding six rebounds and four assists, both team highs. She was 9-of-10 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range.
Doherty was one of five players who scored in double figures for Catholic. Senior Luca Mamula had 13 points off the bench while senior Amanda Johnson added 12, sophomore Molly Aromando had 11 and junior Amelia Baldo scored 10.
Led by seven first-quarter points from Johnson, the Cardinals jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the game's first five minutes and led 23-5 after the first quarter. They never trailed and led for all but 57 seconds.
Doherty added nine second-quarter points while Mamula had seven. The duo combined for 24 first-half points with Doherty totaling 13 in 14 first-half minutes as Catholic led 50-30 at the break.
The Cardinals got 35 points from their bench and held a 25-0 margin in fast-break points.
Catholic continues play in the Jamie L. Roberts Classic on Monday when it hosts Pfeiffer beginning at 4 p.m. William Smith will take on Salisbury at 6 p.m.
