WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by senior Amanda Johnson, the Catholic University women's basketball team posted a convincing 87-51 victory over local rival Gallaudet Tuesday on Franny Murray Court.

The Cardinals (7-0), who are ranked at No. 25 by both D3hoops.com and the WBCA, have started the year with seven consecutive wins for the second time in the last three seasons. They also improved their record to 20-0 against the Bison, including 11-0 at home since the 2000-01 season.

Johnston totaled 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals in just 17 minutes as the 2021 WBCA All-American was 6-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range. She was one of 14 different players who had at least two points for Catholic.

Junior Rachel Bussanich added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds while junior Erin Thompson had a season-high 12 points to go along with four assists.

Led by eight points from Johnson, Catholic led 27-14 after the first quarter. Seven Cardinals scored in the opening 10 minutes with Thompson contributing four points and three assists as the team scored nine points off seven Gallaudet turnovers.

Bussanich, Thompson and Johnson combined for 18 of Catholic's 22 second-quarter points as the Cardinals outscored the Bison, 22-10. The trio accounted for 30 of the team's 49 first-half points as Catholic led by 25 at the break, 49-24.

After scoring 19 points in last week's win over St. Mary's (Md.), junior Sammie McCarter added 10 more on Tuesday, including six in the third quarter where she was 3-for-3 from the floor. She also finished with two assists as she was one of 10 Cardinals to register at least one of the team's season-high 21.

Senior Luca Mamula also had two assists to go along with five points, three rebounds, two blocks and a career-high five steals.

Cassidy Perry led Gallaudet (1-3) with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Catholic begins Landmark Conference play on Saturday when it hosts No. 19/23 Scranton beginning at 4 p.m. The Cardinals and Royals have combined to win the last 10 Landmark Conference championships. The last meeting between the two when both teams were nationally-ranked was back on Feb. 25, 2017 when No. 19 Scranton defeated No. 23 Catholic in the conference championship game on Franny Murray Court, 58-42.
