Cards Upset Top-Seed Moravian to Advance to Championship

Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University field hockey team is headed to the Landmark Conference championship game for the 10th time in 14 years after edging top-seeded Moravian in overtime Wednesday, 3-2.

With the win, the Cardinals (7-11) become just the third fourth-seed to upset the No. 1 seed on their home field in the tournament's 14-year history. Scranton is the only other school to accomplish the feat, defeating Drew, 3-2 in overtime in 2013, before posting a 1-0 win at Catholic in 2018.

The Cardinals won for the second time in as many games on John Makuvek Field this season after winning by the same identical score on Sept. 18. The Greyhounds are now 7-2 at home this season with both losses coming to Catholic.

Moravian (14-3), who was ranked at No. 5 in Wednesday's NCAA Region V Rankings, had won 10-straight games dating back to its first meeting against the Cardinals.

The first quarter was a defensive battle with the Greyhounds registering the only shot over the first 15 minutes.

However, Catholic broke through midway through the second quarter when sophomore Niki Micciche opened the scoring off a penalty corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead with 7:06 remaining.

Micciche has been on a tear as of late, totaling 13 of her 16 points this season in the last nine games, including five goals and 10 points in her last two.

However, Moravian responded right away, scoring the equalizer on a penatly corner of its own less than two minutes later.

Despite the Cardinals holding an 8-3 advantage in shots in the first half, the score remained tied as Greyhound goalie Brooke Wilkinson made five saves.

Similar to the opening quarter, the third proved to be difficult offensively as the two teams combined for five shots, but no goals.

Moravian would take its first lead of the game with nine minutes to play in the fourth when Maddie Call converted her third penalty stroke in three attempts this season.

With just 1:18 remaining in regulation, senior Julia Scanlon registered her first goal and first points of the season to force overtime. It was just the second goal of Scanlon's career and first since Sept. 29, 2018 in a 7-0 win against Drew at Cardinal Stadium.

Playing in its second overtime game this season, Catholic secured its spot in Saturday's title game with the first shot as Micciche chipped a shot over Wilkinson off an assist from sophomore Mary Parker just 3:31 into the extra period. It was Micciche's team-leading seventh of the season and the first game-winning goal of her career.

Senior Maysen Elliott got the start in goal for the Cardinals and recorded two saves before junior Maeve McCarthy entered for overtime and recorded her fourth win this year.

Catholic will be looking for its fifth championship and first since 2015 when its heads to rival Scranton on Saturday. Game time from Weiss Field is at 1 p.m. The Royals, who are receiving votes in the latest NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll, edged out a 2-1 victory at Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 16, snapping the Cardinals' 10-game conference win streak.
