WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic field hockey team took to the turf of Cardinal Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face off against Scranton University for a senior day match up. The Cardinals put up a good fight against the Royals, with
Bella Reyes notching a goal in the last minute of the meeting, but they ultimately fell 3-1.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game, the Cardinals honored four seniors who have dedicated their time and skills to Catholic both on and off the field:
Devon Lasky,
Caroline Caputo,
Mary Rojack, and
Marykate Ardizzi.Â
The first half saw a lot of back-and-forth, Catholic capitalizing on key breakaways that led them to picking up the first two penalty corners of the game. The Cardinals held the Royals to a scoreless first quarter, the defense proving their strength in crucial moments. It wasn't until the 28th minute of the game that the Royals got on the board with a goal from Ava De Natale.
Both teams entered the second half hot, each with strong possessions. The Royals capitalized on a penalty corner to put up their second goal of the game. They later followed with another goal to close out the third, heading into the final 15 minutes leading 3-0.
Catholic didn't give up the fight in the final quarter, scoring a goal in the last minute to avoid a shutout. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty corner in the 59th minute. After receiving the ball from Reyes,
Maddie Pennisi drove the ball in from the top of the circle. Reyes was waiting at the perfect spot to tip the ball in and put the Cardinals on the board. With this goal, Reyes officially took the lead for most goals this season with four.Â
Ella Bowman notched six saves in the meeting, bringing her total to 124 for the season. Despite the strong fight, Catholic fell 3-1 to the Royals.Â
The Cardinals will travel to Huntington, Pa. for a face off against Juniata for their final match up of the regular season. The game will take place on Wednesday, October 29th at 7 p.m.
