Baldo Named MVP as Cardinals Win Pablo Coto Tournament

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Va. - Catholic University women's basketball junior Amelia Baldo scored 17 points as the Cardinals posted a 65-53 victory over Marymount (Va.) in the championship game of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament.

Catholic (5-0) captured its fourth title in the last five regular season tournaments while posting its sixth-straight win over the host Saints and third in-a-row on the road.

Baldo was named MVP after totaling a career-high 17 points, four rebounds and three steals. She earned her second all-tournament selection this season after being selected to the all-tournament team at the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament hosted by McDaniel.

Baldo was joined on the all-tournament team by junior Rachel Bussanich who had 14 points and six rebounds. In two tournament games, she averaged 13.5 points and 9.0 rebounds, posting her second career double double on Friday.

The Cardinals started and finished strong as they outscored Marymount, 35-19, in the first and fourth quarters. Led by six points from Bussanich, Catholic led 15-7 after one.

After the Saints hit a three-pointer to take a 3-0 lead just 31 seconds in, the Cardinals scored the next 12-straight points to a nine-point advantage with 4:06 remaining. A layup by freshman Carly Mulvaney gave the visitors the lead with 7:56 left and they never trailed again.

Marymount (3-2), who is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll, cut its deficit to one, 47-46 with 5:19 to play in the fourth, but led by four points from Baldo and four from Bussanich, Catholic scored eight of the next 11 points to push its lead back to six.

The Cardinals scored eight of their final 10 points from the free throw line over the final 1:20, going 8-for-10 to improve their road record to 15-5 over the last three seasons.

Baldo and Bussanich each scored six points in the fourth quarter as Catholic outscored the Saints, 20-12.

Junior Erin Doherty finished with 14 points, one shy of her season high, to go along with a season-best six rebounds. She is averaging 13.0 points over the team's last three games.

Led by Bussanich, the Cardinals scored 34 points in the paint while holding the Saints to just 28.3 percent shooting.

After a five-game road trip to open the season with two opponents receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll, Catholic will make its home debut on Tuesday when it welcomes St. Mary's (Md.) to Franny Murray Court for the Jamie Lynn Roberts Game. Fans are asked to wear orange which was Jamie's favorite color. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
