Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University field hockey freshman Niki Micciche recorded her first career hat-trick as the Cardinals closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 6-1 win over Juniata on Senior Day.
With the win, Catholic (6-11, 5-2 LC) secured its 14th trip to the Landmark Conference Field Hockey Championship in 14 years. The fourth-seeded Cardinals will travel to top-seeded Moravian on Wednesday for a semifinal contest that begins at 7 p.m.
Senior Katie Cusumano got the scoring started at the 8:39 mark of the first quarter when junior Mary Parker controlled a rebound and found Cusumano in front to give Catholic a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals continued to press in the second quarter, scoring four goals in a span of six minutes to give the team a 5-0 lead going into halftime. Micciche accounted for three of the four goals, scoring the game-winner just over a minute into the quarter off a centering pass from sophomore Lauren D'Emilio.
Three minutes later, Parker found Micciche in front of the net to push the lead to three before Parker notched her name to the goal column when she converted on a penalty stroke with 9:05 remaining.
Senior Caleigh McGough assisted Micciche on her third goal of the game and fifth of the season at the end of the second quarter as Catholic led 5-0. The Cardinals did not allow a single shot in the first half, outshooting the Eagles, 14-0.
Juniata (3-15, 2-5 LC) finally got on the board to start the third quarter when Lillian Case scored off of a rebound for her second goal of the season.
Parker added her second goal of the day give her a career-high six points on the day when she tapped in a cross from Cusumano with 3:28 to play in the fourth.
Senior Maysen Elliott made one save in recording her third win of the season and the 16th of her career.
Prior to the game, the team honored its eight seniors, including Cusumano, McGough, Elliott, Grace Jung, Julia Scanlon, Katie Murphy, Claire Flannery and Ryan Doran.
Earlier this season, Catholic posted a 3-2 road win at Moravian back on Sept. 18. The Greyhounds, who have won 10-straight since losing to the Cardinals, earned the top seed by virtue of a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Scranton who was receiving votes in the NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll.
