Balanced Effort Carries Cardinals Past Goucher, 68-48

Box Score

TOWSON, Md. - A total of 10 players scored and nine played at least 10 minutes as the Catholic University women's basketball team posted a 68-48 road win over Goucher at the Decker Center on Wednesday, setting up a big game for the Cardinals on Saturday at Drew.

Catholic (15-9, 7-6 Landmark) currently sits in the fourth and final playoff spot with Juniata. The two teams split their regular season meetings. A win would assure the Cardinals a spot in the 2019 Landmark Conference Women's Basketball Championship as either the third or fourth-seed. Either way, the team will be on the road in the semifinals next Wednesday, February 20 at the No. 1 or No. 2-seed.

On Wednesday, junior Sydney Poindexter totaled 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists while freshman Amanda Johnson had eight points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore Cristin George finished with eight points and six rebounds, just one short of her career high set in an 83-58 win over Goucher at home on January 23.

Catholic jumped out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 13 points early in the second. A 14-6 run pulled the Gophers within six, 30-24, with 1:36 remaining in the half, but the Cardinals scored the final two baskets to take a 34-24 halftime advantage.

The Cards outscored Goucher by the exact same margin in the second, including 15-7 in the third quarter and 19-12 in the fourth.

Catholic outrebounded the Gophers, 51-34, and totaled 15 steals. Junior Mollie Reynolds had six rebounds, six assists and three steals while junior Megan Stafford had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

The Cardinals had assists on 20 of their 25 baskets.

Freshman Luca Mamula also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Jorryn Avery led Goucher (5-19, 0-13 Landmark) with a career-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds.

Tip-off between Catholic and Drew is at 2 p.m., on Saturday. Live video and live stats are available on CatholicAthletics.com.
