Cardinals Fall to Greyhounds in Overtime of Landmark Semifinal

Bethlehem, Pa. - In a hard-fought Landmark Conference semifinal match between The Catholic University of America women's soccer team and Moravian College, the Cardinals came up short, falling 4-3 to the Greyhounds in double overtime.

With a 104th minute golden goal, the Greyhounds will advance to the Landmark Conference final taking on the University of Scranton, Saturday, Nov. 5.

Catholic senior Lindsay Aleman notched the lone goal of the first half in the 12th minute of play. Aleman received a pass from classmate Juliet Onufrak and ripped the shot from 20-yards out into the top left corner of the net.

Catholic maintained the advantage through the remainder of the half but Moravian struck early in the second. A 52nd-minute goal from Moravian sophomore Gabby Stelzmiller equalized the game at one apiece.

Five minutes later Stelzmiller sent her second goal into the back of the net to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead, but Aleman and the Cardinals were not willing to go down without a fight.

The Cardinals were awarded a direct kick taken by junior Andrea Jablonskyj in the 67th minute. Jablonskyi served the ball to sophomore Taylor Pisk who flicked it to Aleman who then headed it between the posts.

With the game tied 2-2 the Cardinals found their next opportunity to gain the advantage. Sophomore Jillian Sudo inbounded a corner kick in the 80th minute to the head of junior Alexa Povelaitis who then knocked the ball over the goal line for a 3-2 Catholic lead.

As the game came to close, Stelzmiller completed the hat trick in the 87th minute. The Landmark semifinal match reached a six-goal total, tying the game at three a piece and the clock expired sending the contest into overtime.

Catholic outshot Moravian 5-2 in the first 10 minutes of extra time but were unable to convert the golden goal. It was four minutes into the second overtime period when Greyhound senior Valentina Margiottiello found the back of the net and Moravian punched their ticket to the conference final.

Aleman registered seven shots in the semifinal game. Her two goals in the event bring the senior's career total to 59 goals the most in both the Catholic women's soccer program and Landmark Conference history. Additionally, Aleman closes her career leading the program and conference with 129 career points.

Pisk tallied five shots throughout the game while sophomore Christina Peyroux recorded six saves guarding the Cardinal net.

The Cardinals wrap up their 2016 campaign with an 11-4 overall record and 4-3 in the Landmark.
