Cardinals Outscore Crusaders 57-49 in Landmark Opener

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Catholic University of America women's basketball team (RV) scored 13 unanswered points in the final four minutes of their home and conference opener for a comeback victory over Susquehanna University on Wednesday evening, 57-49.

The Cardinals and Crusaders went point-for-point in the first four minutes of the midweek contest. CUA was first on the scoreboard with a layup from senior Josephine Migash and took a quick lead (7-4) at the 3:52 minute mark when fellow senior Jayni Webster sunk a 3-point shot. A triple from the Crusaders tied the game yet Lady Cards found themselves up by one point, 12-11, at the end of the first 10 minute period.

Catholic took a clear lead in the second period outshooting Susquehanna 15-4, giving themselves a 27-15 lead heading into the halftime intermission. Webster hit two shots from behind the arc during the quarter while sophomore Payton Smith put up two jumpers and one free throw.

Although down 12 points heading into the second half, the Crusaders would not leave the nation's capital without a battle. They outshot the Lady Cards 20-10, trailing by just two points (37-35, CUA) at the end of the third period. Susquehanna carried the momentum into the final quarter, taking a seven-point lead (47-40) in the first four minutes.

With 6:05 left on the play clock, Catholic junior Bridget Power took charge, turning a steal into a layup. Two minutes later Power hit a field goal to start the Lady Cards off on their 13-point streak. Power capped off the stretch with the last jumper of the game making the final score 57-49 in favor of CUA.

Junior Michelle DeSantis lead the Catholic offense tallying 12 points and four assists throughout the contest. Both Webster and Power put up 10 points for the Cardinals while Power grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Cardinals continue Landmark Conference play Saturday, Dec. 5, when they head to Bethlehem, Pa., for a 4 p.m., matchup against the Moravian College Greyhounds.
