Cardinals Down River Hawks, Fly into Landmark Conference Final

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The top-seeded Catholic University women's lacrosse team dispatched Susquehanna to book its place in its 15th-straight Landmark Conference Championship game on Wednesday afternoon.

The Cardinals flew past the River Hawks, dominating from start to finish. The 21-4 win marks the largest margin of victory in Landmark Conference Tournament history, bettering a 15-goal Catholic win over Goucher in the 2010 semifinal.

Kate Olsen netted four goals to increase her season total to 43, the most on the team. Mia Perkell and Riley Cherkes each pitched in with hat tricks as 11 different Cardinals found the back of the net. Cherkes only needed three shots to score three goals while Perkell converted a Mattea Del Peschio feed with a nasty behind-the-back finish midway through the third quarter.

Meghan McDonogh's team started the contest on a 5-0 run in the first six-and-a-half minutes before Emma Kelleher got Susquehanna on the board. Olsen and Caroline Beckett scored for Catholic before Heather Riefenhauser netted for the River Hawks to make it 7-2 with just under four minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

After Riefenhauser's tally, the Cardinal defense held Susquehanna scoreless for over 45 minutes of game time, spanning from late in the first stanza to just over three minutes remaining in the final quarter.

Mia Scarduzio contributed in all facets of the game, registering one assist, winning three draw controls, grabbing one ground ball and causing one turnover. Anna Corona also dished out one assist, grabbed a ground ball and won a team-high five draw controls

Madeline Kelly, Jessie Lee and Beckett each scored two goals. Beckett also handed out a hat trick of assists, claimed one draw control, grabbed one ground ball and caused two turnovers.

The Cardinals will now meet Scranton in a rematch of last year's championship game. The third-seeded Royals defeated Moravian on the road, 13-10, in the other semifinal on Wednesday afternoon.

Catholic defeated Scranton 11-10 in the last season's final on Carlini Field and bettered Scranton 11-9 at Weiss Field earlier this season in a game that never saw either team lead by more than two goals.

The Cardinals will host the Royals on Saturday with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Opening draw control is set for 1 p.m.
