Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. - Catholic baseball dropped an elimination contest to Elizabethtown on Saturday morning in Scranton, Pa., falling 6-3.
The first four runs of the contest came via the sacrifice fly with both teams pushing a run across in the third inning. In the top half of the inning, Derek Zelesnick was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning for Catholic before coming around the score the game's first run. Zelesnick moved up to second as Joe Marini found a hole on the left side for his second hit of the day. Zelesnick moved up again on a Ben Nardi fielder's choice before scoring on a Dante Pozzi sacrifice fly to put Catholic ahead 1-0.
The Blue Jays matched Catholic's run in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double from Ben Watson sparking things. David Woolley laid down a bunt to push Watson to third before Robbie Bertucio brought home Watson with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest.
Catholic struck again in the top of the fifth inning with Nardi reaching on a one-out infield single off the end of the bat. Nardi moved up on a wild pitch before Elizabethtown elected to intentionally walk Mitchel Johnson. Pozzi walked to load the bases and Lucas Malave drove in Nardi with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Just like in the third, the Blue Jays answered with a sac fly of their own in the bottom of the inning. Watson led off once again, this time with a single to left center. Woolley laid down another beautiful bunt, putting a pair of runners on. A slow chopper moved both runners up before Catholic intentionally walked Quinten Perilli to load the bases. Tyler McGonigle sent a fly ball to right, scoring Watson to tie the game at 2-2.
Camden Mounts tossed a strong 5.0 innings before giving way to Brendan Martin in the sixth. Mounts allowed six hits and struck out six across his five frames.
The Blue Jays got to Martin, pushing three runs across before Ross Natoli went back to the bullpen for Danny Fitzgerald. Watson, Woolley, and Bertucio all had RBIs in the inning as Watson picked up his third hit of the day to make it 3-2. Bertucio grounded out to Martin, scoring Watson to make it 5-2.
Elizabethtown pushed another run across in the seventh as James Vito was hit by a pitch to open the inning before scoring on an RBI single from Garrett Schwartzbeck.
Zach Burton hit a solo blast for the Cardinals in the top of the eighth inning to bring Catholic back within three runs.
Catholic will await their fate with the NCAA Selection Show set for Monday afternoon.
