Catholic Drops a Pair to Elizabethtown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Catholic baseball dropped a Sunday doubleheader to Elizabethtown, falling to 11-3 in Landmark Conference play after the Blue Jays completed the three-game sweep this weekend.

GAME ONE - Elizabethtown 14, Catholic 2

Despite a strong showing from starting pitcher Camden Mounts, the 10th-ranked Cardinals fell 14-2 in game one on Sunday. Mounts held Elizabethtown scoreless for the first four innings before allowing three runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts.

The Cardinals trailed 3-0 in the top of the seventh before Steve Thomas broke through for Catholic's first run of the weekend, lacing a pinch-hit single to center, scoring Zach Burton. Burton drew a one-out walk before moving up to second as Jesse Lacefield was hit by a pitch. After Thomas' single, Dante Pozzi drew a walk to load the bases, but Joe Marini was retired to end the inning.

Catholic dug in deeper in the eighth, narrowing the gap to 3-2 as Mitchel Johnson blasted a solo home run to left field with one away in the inning. However, that was all the Cardinals would get before the Blue Jays broke the game wide open with 11 runs in the eighth.

Johnson was the lone Catholic hitter with two hits as the team posted six for the game. Ben Nardi doubled for Catholic while Thomas, Jack Elwell, and Derek Zelesnick each singled. Pozzi drew two of the team's five walks.

Elizabethtown totaled 13 hits and eight walks led by three hits from leadoff man Ben Watson. Chris McGill and Tyler McGonigle each drove in three runs. Greg Zerbe improved to 6-0 with a start of 6.2 innings and one run allowed.

GAME TWO - Elizabethtown 10, Catholic 5

The Cardinals racked up 11 hits in game two, including a home run off the bat of Nardi, but Catholic ultimately fell 10-5 to the Blue Jays. All 15 of the game's runs were scored in the final four and a half innings with the Blue Jays striking first with a three-run bottom of the fifth.

Just like Mounts in game one, Catholic's game two starter Danny Fitzgerald tossed four straight scoreless innings to start the contest before running into trouble in the fifth. Fitzgerald struck out seven across five innings of three-run ball in the game.

Nardi, Thomas, and Zelesnick each had two hits for the Cardinals in the game while Nardi, Zelesnick, Lacefield, and Marini drove in the runs.

Catholic scored its first run of the game in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Burton singled to left center to begin a two-out rally with Thomas drawing a walk to follow. Zelesnick singled to right, scoring Burton and forcing Elizabethtown starter Kyle Mulville from the game.

The Blue Jays added another run with an RBI double in the bottom of the inning, but Catholic answered again in the seventh to make it a one-run game. Marini reached on an error to open the inning. Johnson was retired, but Nardi blasted a home run to left, cutting the Blue Jay lead from three runs to one.

The Blue Jays tagged Cormac Terry and Brendan Martin in the seventh, scoring six runs on four hits to take a 10-3 lead. Lacefield added a sacrifice fly and Marini chipped in with an RBI single to get it to the final score of 10-5.

Catholic will go to Stevenson on Tuesday for a non-conference contest at 4 p.m. in Owings Mills, Md.
