Late Heroics Push Cardinals Past Royals in Pulsating Affair

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. — The Catholic University women's lacrosse mustered a massive effort to defeat Landmark Conference rivals Scranton on Saturday afternoon in dramatic fashion.

Trailing by a goal late, the Cardinals equalized with three-and-a-half minutes remaining before scoring two more to win the game 11-9.

After being held scoreless the entire game, senior Grace Hill produced an inspired final four minutes to will the Cardinals to victory. She converted all three of Catholic's final goals to draw level and ultimately push her team to victory.

The senior converted a free-position shot while on the women-down with at the 3:31 mark before cashing in on an assist from Mattea Del Peschio 73 seconds later to give Catholic its first lead since 1-0 early in the first quarter. Hill then scored off of a Jessie Lee feed to give the Cardinals a bit of insurance before holding on for the 11-9 victory.

The Cardinals found themselves behind 6-4 late in the second quarter before a pair of Mia Perkell tallies tied the game. Then, Scranton continued to score and Catholic continued to respond, with the teams exchanging goals until Hill's heroics. Hill's 3-0 solo run matched the largest of the game by either team, equaling Scranton's 3-0 run in the first quarter.

The defensive pair of Rachel Rubenstein and Lauren Bendo produced two massive performances for the Cardinals. Rubenstein scooped up five ground balls, pushing her over the 100 mark for her career, and caused a team-high three turnovers. Bendo matched Rubenstein with five ground balls and netted her first goal of the season to tie the game at eight early in the final stanza.

Shelby Graser and Kate Olsen each netted two goals while Caroline Beckett's assist on Lee's women-up goal in the third quarter marked the 100th helper of her career.

Hill added to her big day with five vital draw controls as freshman Mia Scarduzio pitched in with three. Cardinal goalkeeper Lauren Davidson made six saves en route to the victory.

Catholic now moves to 8-7 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in the Landmark Conference. Meghan McDonough's squad will travel to Christopher Newport for a midweek matchup before hosting Elizabethtown at Carlini Field a week from today in its regular-season finale.
