Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic baseball scored 31 runs in Sunday's doubleheader versus Drew, winning the pair. Senior right-hander Tucker Alch earned the win in game one to become the program's all-time leader in career wins with 23 victories.
GAME ONE - Catholic 6-2 Drew
Alch was outstanding in game one, tossing 7.2 innings and striking out 13 while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Alch sits at 4-0 on the season with a 1.99 ERA in over 40 innings of work. The Texan has struck out 54 batters and issued just seven walks.
Alch worked through the Rangers in order in the bottom of the first before the Cardinals struck in the top of the second. Lucas Malave led off the second inning with a solo blast to left, his fifth of the season. Derek Zelesnick reached base with a two-out single and scored on a Zach Burton double down the left-field line.
Alch continued to cruise before the Cardinals picked up two more runs in the fourth inning to jump ahead 4-0. Zelesnick was hit by a pitch to open the frame and the second baseman swiped second moments later. Dante Pozzi doubled to left to score Zelesnick and moved up to third on a throwing error. Joe Marini brought in Pozzi with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 4-0. Ben Nardi laced a two-out double, but Mitchel Johnson was retired to end the inning.
Drew cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth with a double from Luis Fuentes and an RBI single from Ryan Jones to make it 4-1. The Cardinals got that run right back in the top of the sixth inning with an RBI triple off the bat of Marini. Pozzi drew a two-out walk before scoring on Marini's triple.
Will Fritch hit a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-2. Catholic added its final run in the top of the eighth with Justin McCarthy rapping a leadoff single before coming around to score. Small ball got the job done as McCarthy moved to second on a sac bunt from Zelesnick before moving up another 90 feet on a Burton ground out. Dominic Goodenough unleashed a wild pitch and McCarthy scored to make it 6-2.
The Rangers loaded the bases on Alch with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, pushing Ross Natoli to go to the bullpen. Brendan Martin entered and was able to get the final four outs to preserve a 6-2 win.
Marini and Nardi each had two hits for Catholic while Pozzi added a hit and three walks at the plate for the Cardinals.
GAME TWO - Catholic 25-4 Drew
Catholic scored 25 runs on 23 hits in game two to earn the doubleheader sweep. Catholic had seven extra-base hits in the contest, including three home runs. Seven pitchers took the mound in the win with the final six combining for 6.2 scoreless innings after the Rangers plated four runs against starter Cody Bosak.
The Cardinals scored in eight of nine innings, plating 12 runs across the first three frames. Johnson started the scoring in the first, driving in a run with an RBI single after a Pozzi single and a Nardi double. Now with two on, Malave hit his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to put Catholic up by four. Pozzi followed with a two-run bomb in the second inning, scoring Zelesnick, who reached with a leadoff single, to make it 6-0.
Catholic added six runs in the third on five hits. Malave singled and stole second before moving to third on a wild pitch while Burton reached via a walk. Michael Napolitano singled to left center, scoring Malave to make it 7-2. Steve Thomas singled to load the bases and Pozzi drove in another run with a single to right. Marini made it 9-2 with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Napolitano. Nardi walked to load the bases and Johnson emptied them with a three-run double to make it 12-2.
In the fifth inning, Nardi added to his career home run total with a solo shot to right-center. Napolitano doubled to bring in Johnson who reached via error to give Catholic a 14-4 advantage.
The Cardinals scored five runs on just two hits in the sixth inning as four consecutive Cardinals were hit by a pitch with three of them bringing in runs. Thomas added an RBI single later in the inning to extend Catholic's lead to 19-4.
Jesse Lacefield, Ryan Moore, Thomas, and Mark Villanueva all drove in runs in the seventh as Catholic pushed the lead to 23-4. Malave and Shane Newsome drove in the final two runs with sacrifice flies in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.
Pozzi, Johnson, Malave, Thomas, and Zelesnick all had three hits in the contest while Johnson and Malave drove in five runs each. Marini, Nardi, and Napolitano each had multi-hit games for Catholic.
Camden Mounts picked up the win, striking out three batters in 1.2 innings of relief work.
With three RBIs on the day, Marini remains the team leader with 26 while Johnson holds a one-RBI advantage over Malave for second on the team with 23. Napolitano continues to rake in the backup catcher role for Catholic, as the freshman is hitting .500 with six extra-base hits in nine games.
Catholic's 25 runs are the most since April 23, 2017 when the Cardinals beat Juniata 25-5. Paul Burmester and Bailey Lewis each homered and drove in five runs in the outing.
The Cardinals will finish up the series at Drew tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m.
