Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-3 halftime lead before closing out a 16-10 victory in the Landmark Conference opener at Moravian on Saturday afternoon. Catholic improved to 3-6 on the season while the Greyhounds dropped to 4-5.
Caroline Beckett scored five goals and dished out two assists to lead the way for Catholic while Madeline Kelly, Kate Olsen, and Grace Hill each scored multiple goals for the Cardinals. Defensively, Lauren Davidson earned the win in the cage with 13 saves. Mia Scarduzio led Catholic with four ground balls, Shelby Graser had five draw controls, and Rachel Rubenstein added three ground balls and caused three turnovers.
The Cardinals got on the board less than 90 seconds into the game as Beckett scored her first of five with 13:43 left on the first quarter clock. Jackie Salvatore answered for Moravian with 7:20 left in the period before Catholic scored the next four to take a 5-1 lead after one. Beckett scored her second goal with the Cardinals down a woman at the 5:36 mark which was followed by goals from Lindsay Sawyer (3:29), Hill (3:04), and Olsen (1:39).
Catholic used a five-goal run in the second to jump ahead 10-2 before Salvatore beat the buzzer for Moravian to make it 10-3 at halftime. Beckett scored her third to make it 6-2 with 12:43 left in the first half. Olsen added another on an assist from Beckett just over a minute later to make it 7-2. Kelly scored the next two goals for Catholic, converting on a free-position chance with 9:06 left in the first half and then scoring an unassisted goal with 2:36 left to make it 9-2. Hill's second goal of the game came at the 1:53 mark of the second and put the Cardinals up by eight.
Each team scored three goals in the third as Jessie Lee got on the board for the Cardinals with a free-position shot to open the scoring at the 13:57 mark. The Greyhounds scored the next two to make it 11-5, but Beckett scored her fourth of the day with a woman advantage on an assist from Caroline Regan. Kelly's third of the game was the final goal of the third period, putting Catholic up 13-6 with 1:16 on the third quarter clock.
The Cardinals extended the lead to 10 by scoring the first three goals in the fourth. Julia Ferraiolo scored to make it 14-6 in favor of Catholic before Beckett's fifth and final goal of the day came at the 10:43 mark. Abby Monaco scored Catholic's final goal with 7:18 left on the clock. Moravian would go on to score four goals in the final 5:27 to narrow the final gap to 16-10.
With seven points in today's game, Beckett holds the team lead with 29 for the season (13g 16a). Olsen remains the team's leader in goals scored with 22 after another pair of goals this afternoon. Monaco's goal was her first of the season and seventh of her career while Farraiolo's was her first of the season and fourth of her career. Rubenstein leads the team with 29 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers for the season.
No. 24 Catholic returns home on Wednesday afternoon, hosting eighth-ranked Franklin & Marshall at 4 p.m. at Carlini Field.
