GREENSBORO, N.C. — Catholic University swimming and diving freshman Katie Herman became the first female since Lisa Brooks in 2009 to compete at NCAA DIII National Championships on Wednesday morning.
The impressive freshman, who was named both Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and Swimmer of the Year last month, earned a B Cut to the 2023 NCAA DIII National Championships in both the 50 free (23.44) and the 100 free (51.16) at Landmark Conference Championships, setting program records in both events as her team took home the title.
This morning, Herman swam to 44th place in the 50 free. She came to the wall in 24.02, a time that was not fast enough to put her through to the finals.
Head coach Tyler Ziegler has now coached two student-athletes to the national championships meet after men's swimmer Nathan Ober qualified for the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes last season.
The freshman was pivotal to Catholic's success this season, breaking a staggering five program records during her first season in D.C.
Herman will remain in Greensboro as she prepares to swim in the 100 free. Preliminary heats in the event are scheduled for Saturday morning.
