Catholic Falls to Hampden-Sydney Despite Late Rally

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Catholic men's lacrosse scored three straight in the fourth quarter against Hampden-Sydney to get within four but ultimately fell 16-11 on Saturday afternoon in a road non-conference contest. 

Ryan Carroll scored three goals and added an assist for the Cardinals while Fitz McLaughlin and Victor Rosado each had a pair of goals in the loss. Senior goalie Nic Pezone made 11 saves for Catholic. 

Cooper DiCicco scored the lone goal of the first period for the Cardinals just 13 seconds after Hampden-Sydney took a 2-0 lead just under five minutes into the game. The Tigers scored the final two goals of the period to put Hampden-Sydney up 4-1 after 15 minutes of action. 

The Tigers jumped ahead 8-2 in the second, but Catholic battled back with three straight goals to make it 8-5 with less than four minutes to play in the first half. Mike Mulligan, Collin Stein, and Connor Pierce each scored during the 3-0 run for Catholic. 

McLaughlin and Rosado each scored in the third, but Catholic fell behind by seven heading into the fourth. Catholic scored four of the first five goals of the fourth to get it down to 15-11, but the Tigers tacked on one more and held the Cardinals scoreless for the final 5:42. Carroll scored a man-up goal off an assist from Kevin Ortlieb to open the fourth-quarter scoring, making it a 14-8 game. After a Hampden-Sydney answer, Carroll scored again, this time with Luke Geraghty assisting. With 6:04 left, McLaughlin scored with an assist from Pierce, bringing Catholic within five at 15-10. Pierce assisted again, finding Carroll for his third goal of the quarter with 5:42 to go, making it a 15-11 game. 

DiCicco won 17-of-29 faceoffs and recorded six ground balls in addition to his fourth goal of the season. Andrew Kearns added five ground balls and a caused turnover for the Cardinals. McLaughlin's pair of goals gives him a team-best 13 on the season. 

The Cardinals will have more than a week off until they travel to Gettysburg for a fourth straight road contest on March 22.
