Devine Drops Six as Cardinals Roll Past Eagles

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Catholic men's lacrosse hit the road for their final game of the regular-season against Juniata on Wednesday evening. Joe Devine had a career night, scoring six goals to guide the Cardinals past the Eagles, 31-5.

Catholic struck early in the opening quarter. Chris McCabe found the back of the net three minutes in to put the Cardinals on the board. Zach Gibson followed with his second goal of the season, and Brady McMahon added another as Catholic built a 3-0 lead.

Zane Kromer put the Eagles on the board, but McMahon responded within a minute for Catholic. McCabe followed less than a minute later with his second. Steven Dezelic also found the net off a feed from Dylan Cicero. Kromer capped the quarter's scoring, but Catholic led 6-2 at the end of the first.

The Cardinals continued to grow their lead in the second quarter, totaling 10 goals while holding the Eagles to just one. They opened with a five-goal run in a two-minute span. Lukas Villa started the surge with a goal at 10:46, assisted by Burke Healy. Less than 10 seconds later, Dezelic struck again, set up by Erik Aulbach. Healy, Devine and Dezelic each followed with goals in quick succession to give Catholic an 11-2 advantage.

Kromer interrupted the run with his third goal of the game, but Aulbach answered just four seconds later. Healy and Dezelic each added another in the quarter, while Parker Damon and Ryan Carickhoff recorded their first. Catholic led 16-3 heading into halftime.

In the third, Catholic added four goals in a 30-second span, all during a man-up opportunity. Devine scored three goals during that stretch, two assisted by Villa. Grant Lanham also scored during the man-up situation, beginning his search for a hat trick.

McMahon completed his hat trick to open the quarter, while Lanham did the same to close it out. Damon added another, while Kevin Woram netted the first of his sophomore season. Bailey Wallace contributed two assists in the quarter. The Cardinals held the Eagles scoreless in the third, while extending their lead to 25-3.

Villa once again opened the scoring, starting the fourth with his second goal. Cicero followed with his second and Devine tacked on two more. Matt Shandley also contributed a goal in the final quarter. 

With less than a minute remaining, Patrick McDonough scored off an assist from Lanham, recording the first goal of his career. Catholic had locked in the victory, 31-5.

This victory brings Catholic to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in Landmark play as they close out the regular season. 

The Cardinals have also secured the two seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament. They will host the the winner of First Round Game No. 1 that features the third and sixth seeds. Catholic will host the Semifinals on Wednesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. on Carlini Field.
