Catholic Delivers Dominant Senior Day Performance Over Lycoming

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic men's lacrosse team hosted Lycoming for their Senior Day matchup on Saturday afternoon. 13 Cardinals scored as they soared over the Warriors, defeating them 25-1.

Prior to the start of the game, Catholic honored their 13 seniors who have dedicated their time to the men's lacrosse program over the last four years: Brady McMahon, Steven Dezelic, Drew Bryner, Jack Gibbs, Danny Cappitelli, Sam Pikul, JoJo Pores, Matt Shandley, Andrew Walsh, Chris McCabe, Jack Dwyer, Bailey Wallace, and Nicholas Mort.

Catholic's offense started hot, scoring four goals in less than two minutes, beginning in the fourth minute of play. The first came from senior Dezelic, his 24th of the season, assisted by Cullen Lotz. Healy began his scoring run almost immediately after, netting two goals off assists from Dezelic, then a third from McCabe to secure his hat trick in less than 90 seconds.

Senior Shandley closed out the quarter with his first of the game, assisted by Dezelic, to give the Cardinals a five-goal advantage over Lycoming.

In the second quarter, Jack Suchanek scored immediately after winning the opening faceoff, continuing Catholic's scoring dominance. Erik Aulbach followed a few minutes later with his first of the game.

With an assist each under their belt, Lotz and McCabe scored their first goals of the meeting, unassisted. Senior Wallace added Catholic's 10th goal of the game, his second of the season, to give the Cardinals a double figure lead with two minutes remaining in the half.

Shandley and Aulbach both capped the half with their second goals of the game, and Catholic held a 12-0 lead as they entered the halftime break.

Dylan Cicero opened quarter three with his first goal of the game, followed by Grant Lanham who scored three consecutive goals. Lanham netted his first off an assist from Lukas Villa just five minutes into the quarter, then added his second off a feed from Logan Farrington. He secured the hat trick one second remaining on the clock, scoring unassisted. Catholic held the Warriors to their third scoreless quarter, leading 16-0 heading into the fourth.

Max Cabanas scored first in the final quarter, and was quickly followed by Cicero who netted his second goal of the game, a career-high in his freshman season. Lycoming was able to find the back of the net with just over 10 minutes left of game action with a goal from Ryan MacElhinney.

Joe Devine also contributed two goals in the fourth while Villa netted his first. Aulbach and Cabanas each secured their hat tricks in the final period, adding two more goals apiece. Cabanas capped the scoring for both teams, and Catholic secured the 25-1 victory.

With this win, the Cardinals are now 11-5 overall and 7-1 in Landmark play. This also brings them to 3-1 in series history over the Warriors.

Catholic went nearly perfect in clears, going 16-17 across four quarters. They also were dominant on offense, logging 85 shots, 54 of which were on goal. This is the Cardinals' highest scoring game this season.

Although Catholic kicked off the day by celebrating their seniors, there was success across all classes. Freshmen Cabanas and Lanham had career days, each with a season-high three goals and their first two assists on the season. Lanham logged two caused turnovers and seven ground balls. Junior Aulbach also had a career-high four goals, surpassing his previous high of two which was recorded on April 2 against Drew. Senior Dezelic had a strong day as a playmaker, dishing out three assists.

He remains atop the leaderboard with 34 goals this season, currently eighth in the conference in goals per game, averaging 2.27, and seventh in points per game, averaging 3.53.

Connor Baia and Suchanek both had perfect days at the Faceoff X, Baia going 9-for-9 and Suchanek going 8-for-8. The two are top 10 in the conference in ground balls per game, Baia at fourth averaging 5.06 while Suchanek sits at sixth averaging 4.63. Patrick McDonough also had a successful day in faceoffs, going 5-for-6.

Four goalies saw game action, but Colton Manorek logged the win as well as four saves. Senior Nicholas Mort recorded nearly 22 minutes of play in goal, and logged a save. Gianni Graziano also picked up three saves against the Warriors.
