Doherty Has Career Game in Tight Loss to Drew

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Erin Doherty scored 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Catholic on Saturday afternoon, leading a furious comeback that fell just short in a 58-57 defeat in the Landmark Conference regular-season finale.

The Cardinals trailed by nine points with 5:17 left to play in the contest before ripping off a 16-8 run to narrow the gap to a single point, but time ran out on the Cardinal effort.

Sarah White nailed an open three-pointer off an assist from Erin Thompson with 5:05 left on the clock, narrowing the gap to 50-44. At the 2:17 mark, the Cardinals hit another three, this one from Doherty on an assist from White to put Catholic within five. Madelyn Morgan made a pair of free throws to push it back to seven, but it was White again, drilling a three from an Amelia Baldo assist to make it 54-50 with 1:38 to go.

After a single free throw for the Rangers, it was Doherty again, making it four straight triples for Catholic as she cut the lead to just two points with 67 seconds left on the clock in a 55-53 game. Gwen Alberici made another free throw for Drew before Thompson scored a layup out of a timeout to make it 56-55 with 37 seconds left. Alberici missed a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left, but secured her own rebound and made the next two free throw chances to put Drew up by three with 16 ticks left.

Doherty got a solid look from three out of the Catholic timeout, but it wouldn't fall. Carly Mulvaney scored on a putback with just over a second left to make it 58-57, but the Rangers inbounded the ball and ran out the clock.

Catholic celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, starting an all-senior lineup of Doherty, Thompson, Baldo, Rachel Bussanich, and Sammie McCarter. Julia Tomlinson and Maggie Bednarek were also honored for Catholic. Bussanich pulled down nine rebounds and blocked three shots to go with four points scored. Baldo finished with four rebounds and four assists. White was stellar off the bench, scoring eight points and grabbing seven rebounds, including four offensive boards.

The Cardinals were stout defensively, especially in a low-scoring first half. Catholic held the Rangers to just 3-17 shooting in the first quarter, taking a 14-8 lead. The Rangers flipped it in the second, outscoring Catholic 12-4 to take a 20-18 lead at halftime. The Cardinals trailed by six points heading into the final period.

After nearly three years without a 25-point game, Catholic has now had a 25-point scorer in back-to-back contests as Doherty marked a new career-high this afternoon.

With an 18-7 overall record and a 9-5 record in conference play, the Cardinals earned the number three seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament. The Cardinals will travel to Elizabethtown on Wednesday night to take on the Blue Jays for the third time. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
