Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior Molly McEvoy scored one goal and created another as Catholic fell to Ursinus in a tight affair on Saturday evening at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals trailed 3-1 at the half but were able to cut the deficit to one just four minutes into the third quarter when Kellie Caputo picked out McEvoy directly from a penalty corner.
Catholic pushed hard for an equalizer, forcing Bears goalkeeper Makayla Baessler into three saves in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals earned two penalty corners in the final 10 seconds, but were unable to convert.
The scoring started early when Ursinus took the lead less than five minutes into the first quarter, when Laura Rothschild picked out Jordan Moore from a penalty-corner situation.
The Cardinals responded immediately through sophomore Niki Micciche, who equalized just 54 seconds after the Bears had taken the lead. McEvoy found Micciche, who got loose in front of the cage and showed great skill to elevate a beautiful shot into the roof of the net.
Ursinus scored the next two goals of the match, with Moore notching her second of the contest later in the first quarter and Lauren Weaver taking advantage of another Rothschild penalty corner in the second quarter.
Catholic goalkeeper Abigail Kearney registered seven saves in the Cardinal cage, including four in the second stanza.
The Cardinals now turn their attention to a midweek tilt against Christopher Newport. The Captains will visit Cardinal Stadium on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
