Goals From Wagner and Brown Propel Cardinals Over Greyhounds

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic field hockey team continued Landmark Conference play on Saturday with a road meeting against Moravian. The Cardinals dominated the Greyhounds, with goals from Hope Wagner and Annamaria Brown to win the game 3-0.

Catholic set the tone early with offensive dominance in the first quarter, earning the first corner of the game less than three minutes in. Caroline Cristella took the first shot of the game, and Hope Wagner took a shot within the same minute. The Cardinals added a few more shots that came from Bella Reyes, Molly Romano and Kira Bobian, but were unsuccessful. 

It was in the 13th minute of play that Catholic got on the board. Wagner took a shot that was saved by Moravian defender Dani Lister. Wagner got the rebound and sent the ball to the back of the goal to put the Cardinals up 1-0 over the Greyhounds.

Catholic continued to look for opportunities in the second quarter, adding four penalty corners to its tally. Lauren Keast, Katie Flynn and Reyes each added shots in the second, but were unsuccessful. The Cardinal defense remained strong, holding Moravian off to stay up 1-0 to close out the half.

Catholic added two insurance goals in the third quarter, beginning with a second goal from Wagner in the 33rd minute of game action. Catholic earned a penalty corner, taken by Tess Hake. Flynn took the first shot of the corner that was blocked, then Hake collected the ball, who sent it to Wagner who was able to score.

Later in the third quarter, Annamaria Brown earned her first career goal. Catholic was again awarded a penalty corner in the 41st minute, taken by Bella Reyes, and Brown collected the ball to send it past the goalkeeper, putting the Cardinals up 3-0 over the Greyhounds.

Each team added a shot in the fourth quarter. Romano added the final shot for the Cardinals in the 48th minute and Liv Peechatka added a shot for the Greyhounds in the 53rd minute as they looked to get on the board. Both teams held strong defensively, keeping it scoreless, and Catholic emerged victorious with a score of 3-0.

Hope Wagner now leads the squad with three goals this season. Wagner had six shots on the day, followed by Romano with three. Romano currently leads the squad with 21 shots.

Sophia Bozzone got the start in goal for the Cardinals, earning three saves in her collegiate debut. She played for all 60 minutes, earning the win.

Earlier in the season, the Cardinals defeated Lycoming 5-1 to earn their first conference win. This win over Moravian brings them to 2-0 in Landmark play. Catholic remains undefeated over the Greyhounds, making this their 21st win in series history. The Cardinals improve their overall record to 4-6 this season.

Up next, Catholic will continue Landmark Conference play on Tuesday, October 6 with a home meeting against Goucher. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
