Three Cardinals Score in Shutout Victory Over Gophers

WASHINGTON, D.C.
- The Catholic field hockey team earned its third Landmark victory on Tuesday evening over Goucher. Three Cardinals scored in the home meeting as they took down the Gophers 3-0.

Catholic immediately pressed the Gophers, earning their first corner just 52 seconds into action. They went on to pick up five more in the quarter, four of which were taken by Tess Hake, and one was taken by Maddie Pennisi.

The Cardinals took nine shots in the first quarter alone, five of which were taken by Katie Flynn who was determined to find the back of the net. Molly Romano also had two in the quarter. The Catholic defense showcased its strength, allowing only one shot from the Gophers.

Catholic continued working in the second, picking up two more corners early on. On the 14th corner of the game, Hake inserted the ball, sending it to Sophia Gomez. Gomez sent the ball straight to Pennisi who did not hesitate to shoot, sending it past the Goucher goalkeeper to put the Cardinals on the board with a minute on the clock. This was Pennisi's first career goal.

The Catholic defense once again remained strong, allowing one shot in the second, and the team held the 1-0 advantage as the clock ran out in the half.

After the break, Catholic had another impressive quarter, tallying another six corners in the third, and six shots to go alongside them. They fought to grow their lead over the Gophers, but were held off by the Goucher defense as they entered the final 15 minutes.

With less than five minutes remaining on the clock, Catholic extended its lead with a goal from Hope Wagner. The Cardinals entered the circle, and Lauren Keast fed the ball to Wagner, who took a swift shot to score. With less than a minute remaining, Katie Flynn's determination also paid off. Caroline Cristella delivered her the ball, and with a quick shot, she snuck it in to put the Cardinals up 3-0.

The Cardinals had 23 corners in the game, taking 28 shots. Flynn led the team with 11 shots, and Pennisi followed with five.

Hope Wagner scored her fourth goal of the season against the Gophers, and she currently leads the Catholic squad. Flynn is second on the team with three.

Camryn Lowman earned the shutout and the win in goal, bringing her record to 5-5 this season. She logged one save in the game.

Catholic is now 19-1 over Goucher in series history. With this win, the Cardinals improve their overall record to 5-6 and are 3-0 in Landmark play.

Up next, Catholic will host Wilkes on Saturday, October 10. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
