Cardinals Shutout Rangers in Saturday Scoring Spree

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic field hockey team had a dominant Cardinal Weekend victory over Drew on Saturday. The Cardinals had five different goal-scorers, taking down the Rangers 5-0 in the meeting.

Catholic was quick to get on the board. In the 11th minute of play, Annamaria Brown gave the Cardinals their first goal. Molly Romano sent one in from the top of the circle that was saved by the goalkeeper, Vanessa Pennella. Brown gathered the rebound off her pads, then sent the ball straight in without hesitation to score. This marked Brown's first career goal.

The Rangers were awarded a penalty corner with just seconds remaining on the clock, but were unable to capitalize, and Catholic maintained the 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Cardinals added another goal less than one minute into the second quarter. Catholic was awarded a penalty corner that was taken by Tess Hake. Hake sent the ball to Romano at the top of the circle. She took a strong shot, and Pennella attempted to stop it, but it hit the board and the Cardinals were up two over Drew.

It didn't end there, as Catholic extended their lead once again in the second. Hope Wagner took a shot that resulted in a foul from the Drew keeper. Due to the foul, the Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke that would be taken by Lauren Keast. Keast took a stellar shot to the top right corner of the goal to give Catholic a three-to-nothing lead.

The second half opened with the Cardinals quickly extending their lead in the third quarter. Less than a minute into the half, Wagner took a shot that was saved by the Ranger keeper. Katie Flynn took the rebound and with a swift motion sent it to the back of the goal to put Catholic up 4-0.

To round out the game, the Cardinals added a final goal in the fourth quarter in the 58th minute of play. Wagner received a pass from Anna Cusumano, and shot it to the back of the net. Catholic solidified the 5-0 as time ran out on the clock.

With this win, Catholic improves its record to 7-7 overall and 5-1 in Landmark play. This also marks the Cardinals largest victory of the season.

Hope Wagner currently leads the team with five goals this season, while Katie Flynn follows with four. Tess Hake is on top of the assists category with three this season.

Camryn Lowman earned the win in goal, logging two saves.

Up next, Catholic will travel to Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania for a Landmark meeting against Susquehanna. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sassafras Multipurpose Field.
