Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. — The Catholic University women's soccer team traveled to Homewood Field to open its campaign against No. 9 Johns Hopkins, falling 6-1.
Junior Lauren Cerda provided the Cardinals' first goal of the season, finding the back of the net with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match. She received a driven ball from freshman Peyton Coron on the right wing, before taking two touches into the penalty area and finishing smartly with her right foot into the bottom corner.
Catholic fell behind early when Kaleigh Gallagher produced an acrobatic service from the top-right edge of the penalty area that was nodded in by Buerkelen Woodard.
After trailing 3-0 at the break, the Cardinals came out strong in the second half. Just after halftime, freshman Isabel Doherty worked herself into a dangerous position, latching onto a ball that broke loose after miscommunication in the Blue Jay backline, flicking it just over the crossbar.
Katie Sullivan netted a brace for the Blue Jays, scoring with both of her attempts.
Senior Molly Krzywicki and sophomore Maeve Graham combined for five saves, each working 45 minutes of action in the Cardinal goal. Junior midfielder Claudia DeMartino played the entire match for Catholic, while freshman Payton Hardy logged 83 minutes in her collegiate debut.
The Cardinals now face a quick turnaround, as they host Bridgewater (Va.) on Carlini Field on Saturday evening. Opening kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
