Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team downed Drew, 16-9, on Wednesday night at Carlini Field to advance to their 14th-straight Landmark Conference Championship.
The Cardinals (12-4) were led offensively by juniors Kate Olsen and Caroline Beckett, who contributed five and six points, respectively. On the defensive end, senior Rachel Searle made five saves while causing three turnovers and scooping up three ground balls to earn the victory.
Catholic dominated the first quarter, jumping out to a 9-2 start in the first 15 minutes as six different players found the back of the net. Beckett opened up the scoring just 49 seconds into the game, but the Rangers (11-6) converted on a free position a minute later to even the score. The Cardinals rattled off seven of the next eight, including two by senior Clare Richards, to push the lead to seven.
Drew made up some ground in the second quarter, outscoring Catholic 4-0 over the first 12 minutes to cut the lead to three. However, senior Anna Maupin registered her second assist of the game on a fast break opportunity when she found Olsen with 2:51 remaining as the Cardinals led 10-6 at the halftime break.
The third quarter was all Catholic, as the team shut out the Rangers 3-0 and won all four draw controls during the period. Olsen registered her fourth of the game while sophomore Anna Corona and senior Julia Piet also contributed tallies. Richards and Maupin led the Cardinals on the draw circle with two wins each in the third to add to their game totals of seven and five, respectively.
Olsen and Piet scored in 19 seconds at the beginning of the fourth quarter off assists from Beckett and sophomore Mattea Del Peschio before junior Grace Hill scored her second of the game to stretch the Cardinals' lead to 10 with 7:48 remaining. After the Rangers called a timeout, they rattled off the last three goals of the game. It was not enough however as Catholic held on for a seven-goal victory.
Senior Molly Monaghan was crucial in the midfield, winning four draw controls and tallying a goal. Freshman Grace Murphy caused a career-high three caused turnovers on the defensive end.
The Cardinals will return to Carlini Field on Saturday, May 7, when they host No. 2-seeded Scranton in the Landmark Championship for the seventh-straight year. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
