Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought win on the road over Shenandoah on Wednesday, 13-12.
The Cardinals (10-4) wrapped up their regular season non-conference schedule with a 5-4 record.
Two seniors registered hat-tricks in the win as Julia Piet and Anna Maupin each scored three times. Both were critical in the midfield as well as Piet scooped up two ground balls and caused one turnover while Maupin won three draw controls.
Shenandoah (9-6) got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first three goals over the first 13 minutes and winning all six first-quarter draw controls.
However, Catholic scored four-straight goals over the next two and a half minutes to take a 4-3 lead in the second.
Junior Caroline Beckett assisted senior Clare Richards with 34 seconds remaining in the first to spark the run and junior Grace Hill scored just 18 seconds later on a free position to cut the lead to one.
Maupin won the first draw control of the second quarter to set up the tying goal by junior Kate Olsen at 13:49. Maupin then scored her first goal 47 seconds later as the Cardinals took their first lead.
The Hornets tied the game at four, but Olsen and Maupin scored back-to-back goals within a minute of each other and Catholic went into halftime break with a 6-5 lead.
The Cardinals used a three-goal run to open the second half, surging to a four-goal lead with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter. Piet scored two during the run while sophomore Anna Corona took a one-on-one drive to convert on her lone shot of the day.
Both teams traded goals to close out the third as Catholic led by three, 10-7.
Shenandoah scored three of the first four goals to open the final quarter, but sophomore Shelby Graser scored her second goal of the day to push the lead back to two, 12-10.
After the Hornets pulled back within one, they won the next draw control and drew a yellow card before freshman Grace Murphy caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball en route to a Cardinal clear.
Down a player, Piet completed her hat-trick on a free postion for the game-winning-goal with 3:19 to play.
Freshman Jessie Lee won a career-high four draw controls while sophomore Lauren Davidson earned the victory in her first career start behind six saves and one ground ball.
The Cardinals will wrap up their regular season on Saturday when they welcome Moravian to Carlini Field for a Landmark Conference contest at 1 p.m.
