Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University women's lacrosse team honored its 2022 senior class with a commanding 17-2 win over Juniata on Saturday.
With the win, the Cardinals (9-4, 5-0 LC) extended their Landmark Conference win streak to 50, dating back to the 2014 season. A balanced offense featuring 13 different goal scorers, including all seven senior field players, registered at least one goal.
Catholic got off to a strong start, outscoring Juniata 10-0 over the first 21 minutes of the game en route to their second-largest margin of victory of the season.
Six different Cardinals scored in the opening quarter, including seniors Anna Maupin, Julia Piet and Caitlyn Bowles who all finished with two points each. Piet also scooped up a career-high six ground balls to highlight an effort that held the Eagles to just 11-of-23 on clears.
Junior Kate Olsen also scored two of her game-high three goals in the first quarter as the Cardinals took a 7-0 lead at the break.
Junior Caroline Beckett opened up scoring with her first of two goals in the second quarter off a pass from Bowles before assisting classmate Grace Hill just a minute later. Sophomore Riley Cherkes closed out the first half by scooping up a rebound in front of the net and scoring with just two seconds remaining.
Fellow seniors Lauren Zelnik and Molly Monaghan scored back-to-back goals just two minutes apart to open the second-half scoring. Senior Rachel Searle secured the win in net, making four saves and scooping up two ground balls in 45 minutes.
The Cardinals' fourth quarter was impressive on both ends as they closed out the game on a 3-0 run. Senior Iszy Del Peschio scored the first goal of her career and classmate Clare Richards converted on a free-position opportunity with 39 seconds remaining. Sophomore Lauren Davidson made three saves in relief to blank the Eagles (11-4, 3-3 LC) in the final 15 minutes.
Hill and Richards led the Cardinals with three draw controls while junior Kelsey Martin, sophomore Rachel Rubenstein and freshmen Lauren Bendo and Caroline Regan all led the defensive effort with a game-high three ground balls a piece.
As a team, the Cardinals scooped up a season-high 37 ground balls while causing a season-high 18 turnovers.
After the game, the eight-player senior class of Bowles, Del Peschio, Maupin, Monaghan, Piet, Richards, Searle and Zelnik were honored for their contributions to the program.
The Cardinals return to the field on Wednesday, April 27 when they travel to Shenandoah for a non-conference match-up. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
