Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Behind a 8-0 fourth quarter, the No. 17 Catholic University women's lacrosse team posted its twenty-third straight win over Scranton to move to 2-0 in Landmark Conference play. The 17-8 win is the largest margin of victory since a 20-4 win on the road in 2017.
The Cardinals were led offensively by junior Caroline Beckett, who posted her second eight-point game of the season on three goals and five assists. Defensively, sophomore Rachel Rubenstein scooped up seven ground balls while causing a career-high six turnovers.
Catholic (5-4, 2-0 LC) got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first three goals over the opening eight minutes. Sophomore Anna Corona scored during the run to kick off her three-goal day to post her first career hat-trick. Beckett assisted fellow junior Kate Olsen on her first two goals of the afternoon as Olsen finished three of her game-high four goals in the opening 15 minutes.
Scranton (5-5, 1-1 LC) gained back some ground in the second quarter, outscoring Catholic 4-2. Beckett scored both goals for the Cardinals during the period as they held a 6-5 lead at the halftime break.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth period as both teams scored three times. Beckett assisted on two to Olsen and Corona and junior Grace Hill scored the third. On the defensive end, senior Rachel Searle made three of her six saves to help preserve the one-goal lead with one quarter remaining.
The Cardinals' offense exploded in the fourth quarter, scoring eight unanswered goals, while the defense caused six Royals turnovers and forced a shot clock violation to stretch their lead to nine. The eight goals is the most in a quarter by the Cardinals this season.
Senior Lauren Zelnik proved to be the spark for the offense, scoring her first goal of the season after missing the first eight games due to injury. Beckett and senior Julia Piet then scored on back-to-back fast break opportunities in less than a minute to push the Cardinals' lead to four.
Corona and Piet completed their hat tricks just two mintues apart before senior Anna Maupin got in on the scoring, finishing on a free position opportunity with 3:40 remaining. Freshman Kayla Brooks provided the final tally off Olsen's second assist of the afternoon to stretch the lead to nine.
Senior Clare Richards led the Cardinals on the draw circle with a team-high five while Corona and Maupin both won three a piece. Off the bench, junior Kelsey Martin scooped up a season-high three ground balls and caused a career-high four turnovers.
