Giombetti Breaks Home Run Record, Cards Fall to Blue Jays

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University baseball senior Peter Giombetti became the school's single-season home run leader on Senior Day, but the Cardinals fell to Elizabethtown at Talbot Field Saturday, 17-8.

Despite dropping two of three games to the Blue Jays this weekend, the Cardinals (24-8, 10-2 LC) remain in first place in the Landmark Conference standings, two games ahead of rival Scranton.

Eight players combined for 10 home runs on Saturday with four players from each team hitting at least one. Giombetti finished 1-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two walks.

With Catholic leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Giombetti sent a solo shot over the scoreboard in left center for his 12th home run of the season, surpassing the record set by Brendan Cotter in 2018.

Giombetti was one of four Cardinals to hit a home run as he was joined by freshman Dante Pozzi, senior Matt Tesoriero and freshman Tommy DiGiorgio. Catholic now has 43 home runs this season, setting a new Landmark Conference single season record. The previous mark was 42 set by Susquehanna in 2009.

The Cardinals set the single season record for home runs earlier this season, breaking the previous record of 35 set in 2018.

Pozzi gave Catholic an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first and an RBI-single in the fourth pushed that lead to 3-0.

However, Elizabethtown (17-16, 10-5 LC) tied the game in the top of the fifth on a three-run homer by RJ Agriss and didn't stop there as the Blue Jays hit back-to-back blasts to lead off the seventh and increase their lead to 5-3.

Elizabethtown scored eight runs in the seventh, seven of which came on home runs. Ben Watson hit two solo shots in the inning while Tom McGonigle hit the first of two grand slams for the visitors.

Watson hit his third home run of the game in the top of the eighth, a grand slam to right center, to extend the Blue Jays' lead to 17-6. Elizabethtown finished with six home runs as a team, tying the Landmark Conference record set by Scranton on April 25, 2008 and matched by Susquehanna against Scranton on March 22, 2009.

Tesoriero had a three-run shot in the seventh before DiGiorgio hit the first of his career with a two-run blast to right in the bottom of the ninth. DiGiorgio is the 12th different Cardinal to hit a home run this year.

Tesoriero was the only player with multiple hits on the day as he finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs. He also walked once.

Senior Nick Marini made his fifth appearance and second start of the season on the mound, scattering three hits over 2.1 scoreless innings while striking out one before giving way to freshman Cody Bosak who suffered his second loss in 10 appearances.

Catholic and Elizabethtown combined for 25 runs and 24 hits, including 10 home runs while using 12 different pitchers.

The Cardinals conclude their four-game homestand on Wednesday when they host 10th-ranked and defending national champion Salisbury at Talbot Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
