Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University baseball team split a doubleheader with Landmark Conference foe Elizabethtown on Friday at Talbot Field.
With a win in the opener, the Cardinals (24-7, 10-1 LC) extended their home win streak to 10 games and their Landmark Conference win streak to 16.
Senior Peter Giombetti went 5-for-7 with three doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. He also walked twice. Senior Matt Tesoriero was 4-for-9 with a double, three-run homer, four RBIs and four runs.
Freshman Dante Pozzi extended his streak of safely reaching base to 24 while Giombetti is right behind at 23.
Catholic 5, Elizabethtown 4
Giombetti went 3-for-4 with three doubles and one RBI in the opener to lead five players who had at least two hits each.
After the Blue Jays tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the seventh, the Cardinals regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when freshman Dante Pozzi scored on double and fielding error by the Blue Jays.
Catholic added what proved to be the game-winning run in the eighth when Tesoriero led off with a double to center before scoring on an RBI-single by freshman Matthew Fisher.
Tesoriero went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Fisher was also 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI. The two both scored a run in the bottom of the second to put the Cardinals in front 3-1 on a sac bunt from senior Tommy Antonucci and a single to left by Pozzi.
Junior Tucker Alch earned his seventh victory of the season on the mound, extending his winning streak to six. Over his last six starts, he is 6-0 with a 2.90 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 40.1 innings. Meanwhile, Catholic has outscored its opponents, 59-20.
Sophomore Danny Fitzgerald picked up his second save in relief, scattering two hits over the final two innings while striking out two.
Elizabethtown 16, Catholic 14
Four different Cardinals homered in the loss.
Junior Zach Burton blasted one out in the first inning to give Catholic an early 2-0 lead before Catholic plated six in the third to go up 8-1.
After junior starting pitcher Jack Zaffiro exited the game, Elizabethtown (16-16, 9-5 LC) put together a mammoth inning in the fourth. The Blue Jays scored 10 runs on nine hits with 11 consecutive batters reaching base as the visitors took an 11-8 lead.
Catholic responded immediately in the bottom of the inning when graduate student Billy Duke singled to score Burton and Tesoriero followed with a three-run bomb over the scoreboard in left center that put Catholic back in front, 12-11.
The Cardinals added a pair of solo home runs in the fifth as Pozzi and pinch-hitter Antonucci got in on the act. However, the Blue Jays scored added five more runs in the top of the eighth to regain the lead for good.
Sophomore Camden Mounts pitched exceptionally well out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit and one walk over 3.2 innings while striking out four.
Elizabethtown's Eric Sipling got the win after pitching 4.2 innings in relief while Zach Silfies earned his first save of the season.
Junior Brendan Martin suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 3-1.
The Cardinals and Blue Jays conclude their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon on Senior Day.
