McDonogh Picks Up 200th Win, No. 13 Cardinals Top Maroons

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's lacrosse junior Kate Olsen registered her third hat trick of the season as the Cardinals picked up their third win of the season Saturday, 13-12, over Roanoke at Carlini Field.

With the win, Catholic head coach Meghan McDonogh picked up the 200th of her career as her record now stands at 200-80 in 16 seasons.

The Cardinals (3-3) led Roanoke in almost every statistical category, including holding the Maroons to just 18-of-23 on clears while forcing 23 turnovers.

Offensively, nine players registered at least one point in the win.

Catholic got off to a fast start as senior Anna Maupin scored just 25 seconds into the game off the opening draw to secure the early lead. Maupin also had a game-high seven draw controls for the second-straight game.

After Roanoke tied it at the 6:43 mark, senior Julia Piet netted her first of the day off a pass from Olsen to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.

Sophomore Shelby Graser converted on a free-position opportunity to open up the scoring in the second quarter before the Maroons rattled off the next two goals to tie the game at 4-4.

Senior Clare Richards and sophomore Anna Corona each converted on free-position opportunities in the second quarter as the teams were knotted at five at halftime.

Roanoke scored the first goal of the second half to take its first lead of the game before junior Caroline Beckett had back-to-back assists to Piet and Olsen to tie the game for the fifth time at 6-6.

Beckett also scored in the third quarter to add to her game-high five points as the Cardinals led by two after three quarters. Senior Rachel Searle made three of her nine saves in the third quarter.

Richards and sophomore Riley Cherkes connected less than five minutes into the fourth quarter to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the game, 12-9.

The Maroons scored three of the next four, but Searle picked off a potential game-tying feed to preserve the lead and give Catholic the win.

Searle added a career-high six ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with her nine saves while senior Iszy Del Peschio caused a game-high three caused turnovers and had two ground balls.

The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday, March 23 when they travel to No. 5 Franklin & Marshall for a 5 p.m. opening draw.
