The Tigers (4-3) scored back-to-back goals just 10 seconds apart in the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 12-8, wth 7:10 remaining.
The score remained the same through three before the Cardinals began their comeback. Senior Sean Baudo and junior Connor Pierce scored back-to-back to start the fourth before Bobby Claggett scored his third for Hampden-Sydney to stop the run.
Trailing 13-10 with under five minutes to play, junior Danny Fitzgibbons picked up his first career goal with 4:40 left before senior Joey Rockovich scored two minutes later to pull Catholic back within one for the first time since midway through the second quarter.
After losing the ensuing faceoff, the Tigers forced a turnover and looked to increase its lead. However, the Cardinals returned the favor, forcing Hampden-Sydney into its fifth shot clock violation to regain possession and give themselves a chance to tie the game for the third time.
