Cardinals Open Season With Win at No. 20 Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with a convincing road victory at No. 20 Washington and Lee Saturday, 13-6.

The Cardinals (1-0) posted what is believed to be their first win over a ranked opponent in program history while improving to 2-0 in season openers under head coach Jon Sax.

Catholic was led by four points each from senior Sean Baudo and junior Luke D'Ambrogi.

The Cardinals got off to a quick start, scoring just 11 seconds into the game as senior Mike McShea won the opening face-off and found graduate student Kevin Crowley for the opening goal.

Trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, Catholic scored the first three goals of the second quarter and never looked back.

Six different players scored a goal as the Cardinals held a 6-3 halftime lead. They never let the Generals get within two the rest of the way while stretching their lead to as many as eight following their third man-up goal of the game with 4:47 remaining. 

The Generals (0-1) scored the first goal of the second half just 11 seconds in before Catholic ran off three in-a-row on tallies from Crowley, junior Collin Stein and junior Connor Pierce. Senior Chris Novella capped the third-quarter scoring with his first of the season as the Cardinals led, 10-5.

Catholic scored the first three goals of the fourth to extend its lead to eight, including markers from seniors Tommy Welch and Cameron Dunn.

The Cardinals had 11 different players record a point with nine netting at least one goal.

Senior Tynan Hillery led the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls while senior Matthew Clohessy and junior Jackson Powers also scooped up three ground balls. Junior Nic Pezone made 10 saves to pick up his ninth win in his last 10 starts.

Catholic hosts Mary Washington in its home operner on Wednesday at Carlini Field. Opening face-off is set for 7 p.m.
