Thompson, White Excel as Catholic Enters Holiday Break with Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's basketball team defeated Widener on Tuesday to ensure that the Cardinals will enter 2023 with a 10-2 record.

Catholic was led by strong performances from Erin Thompson and Sarah White who combined for 30 points.

Widener used two 6-0 runs to lead 18-13 after the first quarter, but Catholic battled back to take a slim 35-33 advantage into the break.

Similar to yesterday, the Cardinals made use of the third quarter to take control of the contest. Catholic outscored the Pride 20-12 in the stanza as seven Cardinals registered a point.

Widener shot 42.6 percent from the field to Catholic's 31.4 percent, but the Cardinals buried 10 threes while the Pride only connected on five. The Cardinals were also dominant on the glass, yanking down 55 total rebounds, including a staggering 31 offensive boards.

Thompson was brilliant throughout the contest, leading Catholic's scoring effort with career-high 17 points. She connected on three of her three-point attempts and also forced a game-high four steals.

White delivered great energy off the bench, setting her own new career-high mark with 13 points while also grabbing six boards and pitching in with one assist and one steal. The junior played a big role in Catholic's 27-5 advantage in bench scoring.

The Cardinal trio of Anna Scoblick, Keegan Douglas and Carly Mulvaney each pitched in with nine points, respectively. Mulvaney led the rebounding effort with 12 boards while Scoblick and Amelia Baldo each dished out four assists.

Jordan D'Ambrosio, Avalynn Baer and Lindsay Kutz all scored in double figures for the Pride. Kutz came up just one rebound shy of a double-double.

With the victory, Catholic joined Berea in finishing the Jamie L. Roberts/Fairfield Inn DC Holiday Tournament at a perfect 2-0.

Thompson was honored as the Jamie L. Roberts Tournament Most Valuable Player after totaling 26 points, five assists and four steals over the two games. She was joined by Scoblick in representing Catholic on the all-tournament team.

Catholic will now enjoy a lengthy break from action over the holiday season and beyond. The Cardinals will rest up before returning to competitive action on Saturday, Jan. 7, for a date with Landmark Conference rivals Scranton. Tipoff against the No. 7-ranked Royals is set for 2 p.m.
