Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Catholic University women's soccer secured a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament by winning their final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
First half goals from Brienna Spano and Alexa Adelmann were enough to see off Elizabethtown and secure the No. 4 seed in the postseason tournament.
After freshman goalkeeper Ava Rieger made a pair of saves in the opening two minutes of the match, the Cardinals turned on the jets and immediately began applying serious pressure to the Blue Jay backline.
The breakthrough came in the ninth minute when Lauren Cerda delivered a sumptuous ball directly from a corner to Spano's head at the back post. The freshman made no mistake, powering the header past Trinity Soto to net her collegiate goal.
Both teams exchanged a slew of shots before a vital passage of play in the 36th minute.
The Blue Jays worked down the right to create their best chance of the opening stanza as Ashley Rosati broke free of a defender and cut toward goal. Rieger, however, came up big, thwarting Rosati with stunning save from close range after closing the angle.
The Cardinals immediately turned the ball upfield, countering at pace. The ball came to Adelmann on the edge of the penalty area, who, after taking a second to compose herself, fired a brilliant effort inside of the left upright to double Catholic's advantage. The senior's first goal of the season came just 28 seconds after Rieger's huge save.
After the Blue Jays cut the lead in half in the final minute of the first half, Catholic leaned on its defense, which has been extremely strong throughout the season, to see them over the line.
The Cardinals were able to break up the game effectively in the second half, only allowing three shots in the final 45 minutes. The two teams combined for a staggering 28 shots in the opening 45 minutes while only offering seven combined efforts toward either goal in a much less open second half.
Despite not scoring, junior Jordan Siok posed a threat all afternoon and took a game-high six shots. Sara Placide and Teighan Boyle were standout performers for Catholic as well, both logging the entire 90 minutes.
With the victory, the Cardinals have earned the right to face the No. 1 seed on Tuesday night. Catholic will make the trip north to Scranton to take on the Royals. Kickoff in the semifinal contest is set for 7 p.m.
