Box Score SELINSGROVE, Pa. — The Catholic University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought contest to a strong Susquehanna side on Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals played the River Hawks tough, but an early goal by Emily Wertz was enough to push Susquehanna over the finish line.
The game was tight throughout, which was expected when two extremely stout defensive outfits met to do battle. Entering the match, Catholic boasted a shutout streak of more than 335 minutes. With the 1-0 victory, the River Hawks have now gone a staggering 10 games without conceding a goal, an active streak of more than 900 minutes of game time.
There was very little between the two sides as Susquehanna mustered a slight edge in shots, 6-5, while Catholic earned three corners to the River Hawks' two.
Katarina Bauer and Isabel Doherty both fired two shots toward the Susquehanna goal, while Bauer registered the only shot on target. Sara Placide put in a shift in a defensive midfield role, playing the full 90 minutes. Brienna Spano was the only other outfield player to play the entire match for Catholic.
The Cardinals will look to get back in the win column when they face the Bullets in a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff in Gettysburg is scheduled for 4 p.m.
