No. 18/25 Cardinals Fall to Elizabethtown in Overtime

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Catholic University women's basketball senior Amanda Johnson and freshman Carly Mulvaney each posted a double double as the Cardinals fell to Elizabethtown in overtime Monday, 72-63.

Catholic (15-2, 6-2 LC) had won eight-straight coming into tonight's rescheduled game from Wednesday, Jan. 12. It was also the team's first loss in the last four against the Blue Jays.

Johnson totaled the fourth double double of her career and her second this season with 10 points and 12 rebounds while Mulvaney posted the first of her career with 17 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs.

Tonight marked the first time since Nov. 17, 2018 that two players record a double double in the same game for the Cardinals. That night, Megan Stafford had 10 points and 15 rebounds while Sydney Poindexter added 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 61-43 road win at Stockton.

Catholic trailed by nine entering the third quarter, 54-45, before cutting its deficit to one on two separate occasions, the last of which came with 1:53 remaining, 57-56.

After two made free throws by Taylor Huyck, Elizabethtown (15-3, 7-1 LC) pushed its lead to three with 17 seconds to play. Following a timeout by the Cardinals, Mulvaney grabbed one of her six offensive rebounds to give the team a second attempt.

After another timeout, head coach Matt Donohue set-up an inbounds play that left Mulvaney open for three in the corner where she knocked down her first triple of the night to send the game into overtime.

Mulvaney totaled seven of her 17 points in the fourth, going 3-of-4 from the floor.

However, the Cardinals were limited to just 2-of-9 shooting in the extra period as the Blue Jays outscored them 13-4, scoring seven points from the free throw line where they were 7-of-12.

Catholic outrebounded Elizabethtown, 47-34, totaling 24 offensive rebounds which led to 19 second-chance points.

Junior Rachel Bussanich finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Summer McNulty led the Blue Jays with a game-high 20 points while DaniRae Renno had 16 points and eight rebounds. The Cardinals held the league's leading scorer, Veronica Crist, to 12 points, eight below her average.

Catholic quickly returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes Juniata to Franny Murray Court for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
