Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Catholic University women's soccer head coach Casey Sommers earned her first win as a Cardinal as her team used two first-half goals to post a 2-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan Saturday.
The win was the first for Sommers at Catholic and the 45th of her career.
"I am so proud of how this group bounced back from Thursday and played hard for a full 90 minutes," said Sommers. "The personality of our team is starting to show in how we play and we hope to keep the momentum going into tomorrow."
The Cardinals (1-1) scored their first two goals of the season on just three shots in the first 28 minutes while riding a strong effort in goal from freshman Maeve Graham who made eight saves to earn her first career victory.
Sophomore Jordan Siok netted her first career goal in the 19th minute to give Catholic its first lead of the young season. Just nine minutes later, freshman Courtney Cutting picked up her first as well, netting what proved to be the game-winner at 27:16.
"The first career goals for Jordan and Courtney were beautiful, but our collective defense really sealed the deal in this game," added Sommers.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) outshot the Cardinals 19-4, including 11-1 in the second half. Catholic was also credited with three teams saves in the win.
The Cardinals wrap-up their trip to Virginia Beach with a neutral site contest against Christopher Newport on Sunday. The Captains were ranked at No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 Poll. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
