Fifteen Cardinals Score in NCAA First Round Win Over Becker

LANCASTER, Pa. - A total of 15 players had at least one point as the Catholic University women's lacrosse team posted a 24-3 victory over Becker Saturday in the NCAA first round at Franklin & Marshall's Shadek Stadium.

The sixth-ranked Cardinals (10-0) improved to 8-0 all-time in the first round, including 3-0 at neutral sites.

Catholic set a new program record for most goals scored in an NCAA tournament game, scoring 24 on a season-high 42 shots.

Seniors Holly Regan and Bridget Beck scored five points each with Regan totaling two goals and three assists while Beck had three goals and two assists. Regan now has 198 career points with 88 goals and 110 assists, leaving her two shy of becoming just the seventh player in team history to reach 200.

Regan had a hand in four of the team's first seven tallies with two goals and two assists as the Cardinals led 7-0 just under seven minutes into the game.

Becker (8-5) got on the board with 23:02 remaining in the first half before Catholic scored the next four to go ahead by 10 with 10:17 left.

The Cardinals scored the final four goals of the half to take a 15-2 lead into halftime. The team got at least one goal from 11 different players, including two from freshman Mauria Blair.

Sophomore Abby Monaco had a goal and two assists in the first 30 minutes as Catholic outshot the Hawks, 27-5.

Four more Cardinals scored in the second half, including senior Anna Maupin and juniors Molly Monaghan, Julia Piet and Caitlyn Bowles. Monaghan, who was named MVP of the Landmark Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship, finished with one goal, two ground balls and nine draw controls.

A total of 10 players scored their first goal in the NCAA tournament, including Beck and sophomore Kate Olsen. Olsen finished with three goals and four points to increase her team-leading totals to 32 goals and 41 points this season.

Sophomore Caroline Beckett also had four points with two goals and two assists.

Defensively, junior Rachel Searle made her first career start in the NCAA tournament and had two first-half saves before giving way to senior Nanci Hernandez who had one in her ninth NCAA tournament appearance.

Searle improved to 3-0 this season and 5-0 in her career.

Catholic advances to the second round for the 12th time in 12 NCAA tournament appearances and will face No. 10 St. John Fisher on Sunday. The Cardinals defeated Cazenovia Saturday, 25-0. It will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools with opening draw set for 1 p.m.
