Catholic Concludes Regular Season with Sweep of Moravian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Catholic University baseball team traveled to Moravian College today for their final regular season matchup. The Cardinals (15-9, 15-9 LC) swept the Greyhounds 9-5 and 7-0.

Junior Matt Tesoriero led Catholic at the plate where he went 7-for-9 on the day while sophomore Ben Nardi homered twice. Four Cardinal pitchers shared time on the mound including junior Tucker Alch who pitched a complete seven innings in game two.

Game One: Catholic 9, Moravian 5:

Senior Nolan Lundholm brought in Catholic's first run of the day with a double down the left field line to score Tesoriero. A RBI-single off junior Peter Giombetti's bat scored Lundholm followed by sophomore Conor Casey's single that caused seniors Tighe Watson and Billy Duke to cross the plate. Moravian answered back with a run, making the score 4-1.

Catholic lengthened their lead with four more runs during their next at-bat when Nardi blasted his seventh home run of the season, scoring classmate Zach Burton in the process after he drew a walk. Another single and a stolen base by Tesoriero put him in scoring position for Giombetti's RBI-double. Watson stepped up next with a single to centerfield to bring Giombetti back home. Moravian again replied with a single run in the bottom of the inning.

The Cardinals scored their ninth and final run at the bottom of the fourth while Moravian slowly brought in three over the next three innings. By the bottom of the eighth, Catholic led Moravian 9-5 for game one's final score.

Junior Nick Marini recorded the win on the mound with 5.0 innings pitched where he allowed four runs to score on 10 hits, striking out one. Senior Chris Kelly appeared for 3.0 innings and recorded four strikeouts and one run off two hits in 13 batters faced. Junior Jack Zaffiro closed for Catholic in the ninth where he struck out two of three batters and allowed one hit.

Game Two: Catholic 7, Moravian 0:

Fourteen hits and seven runs in game two secured Catholic's sweep over Moravian.

The Cardinals gained a three-run lead right off the bat. Nardi led off with a double followed by Lundholm's RBI-single to left field. Watson hit his second career home run to bring in himself and Lundholm headed into the second.

At the top of the third, Tesoriero singled to shortstop and then stole second to put himself in scoring position for Lundholm's single to center fielder for a 4-0 lead.

Senior Tyler Shaffer led off the top of the fourth with a single to centerfield where he advanced to second on a balk. Junior Tommy Antonucci put a hit on the board with his RBI-double to left center and gave Catholic a comfortable 5-0 lead.

A single by senior Nicholas Torroella put a Cardinal on the basepaths just in time for Nardi's second bomb of the day for another two runs scored. A scoreless inning and a half confirmed Catholic's sweep of Moravian.

Alch threw a complete seven-inning game against the Greyhounds, allowing only two hits. He walked one and struck out six batters in the win. He improved to 6-0, the best record in the Landmark and holds the third best earned-run average of 0.81.

Today's doubleheader concluded Catholic's regular season. The Landmark postseason schedule will be announced after the results of tomorrow's remaining conference games are complete.
